Biography

Notes

Joseph's father was the lover of Mary Yates. See her profile for more information about her relationships.

In 1880, eight-year-old Joseph is said to be a "cousin" in the household of fifty-six-year-old Richmond. Richmond is almost certainly his grandfather. I am not certain which of Richmond's sons was Joseph's father as of yet. ~Murtaugh-30

Joseph was apparently also counted in his mother's household as "Joseph Hays," his mother having recently married James Hays. Although the last name field is left blank, implying they are all Hays children, it is clear which are Mary's and which are James' from a previous marriage--the list of children in age order "restarts" after three-year-old Mollie (James Hays' child) with Joseph (Mary Yates' child). Joseph's siblings Eugenia and Martha, also not Hays' children, follow him.
