Biography

Rose may have been born May 9, 1910 (see Notes) in Pennsylvania, United States. Her parents were Samuel Levy and Flora (Jacobs) Levy.[1]

In 1910, Rose (shown as Rosie, age 2) lived at 328 Green Street in Lancaster, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, United States with her parents and siblings Frank (age 3), and Lena (age 0). Her father was a shoemaker and had his own repair shop.[1]

In 1920, Rose (shown as Rosa, age 11) lived at 316 Chester Street in Lancaster, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, United States with her parents and siblings Frank (age 13), Leona (age 10), Tillie (age 8), Harry (age 6), and Helen (age 5). Her father was a shoemaker and had his own shop.[2]

In 1930, Rose (age 21) lived at 28 Conestoga Street in Lancaster, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, United States with her parents and siblings Leona (age 20), Tillie (age 18), Harry (age 17), Helen (age 16), and Bernard (age 5). Her father was a laborer in a linoleum plant, her mother worked as a saleslady in a grocery store, Rose was a saleslady in a department store, Leona was a stenographer for an alderman, Tillie was a saleslady in a 5&10 store, and Harry was an usher in a theatre.[3]

Rose married Louis Gordon, a Lithuanian immigrant, September 10, 1933 in Dauphin, Pennsylvania, United States[4] and they had at least one child (see Notes).

In 1940, Rose (age 31) and Louis (age 36) lived at 313 Emerald Street in Harrisburg, Dauphin, Pennsylvania, United States with their son Jerald (age 5). Louis was the proprietor of a grocery store.[5]

Rose died May 10, 1952 and was buried in the Chisuk Emuna Cemetery in Harrisburg, Dauphin, Pennsylvania, United States.[6]

Notes

Birth Date
According to Rose's gravestone, she was born May 9, 1910.[6] Her sister Leona was born less than seven months earlier, on November 19, 1909, according to her gravestone[7] and Social Security Death Index record.[8] Although it is possible that Rose survived such a premature birth, the 1910 census[1] shows Rose's birth year as about 1908 and the 1920 census[2] and 1930 census[3] both show it as about 1909, which would allow for only five months age difference between her and Leona. It is likely that Rose was older than Leona because all three census records show them in that order. It is therefore believed possible that Rose was born in 1908, however in the absence of a more reliable source, her birth date is shown here as the one engraved on her gravestone.

Children
Rose's known children were:

  • Jerald Gordon, born about 1935 in Pennsylvania
