  • Page County, Iowa Marriage Records: James Lewellen wed Mary Ann Rose, 05 Mar 1853. Affidavit of this was filed in court papers dealing with guardianship of children which states:

State of Iowa Page County P.W.W. Russell Clerk of the Circuit Court within and for said County hereby certify that James Lewellen and Mary Ann Rose were duly joined in marriage as husband and wife according to the law of the State of Iowa on the 5th day of March 1853 in said Page County State aforesaid as appear of record in my office. In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and affixed the Seal of Said Court at office in Clarinda.

  • Died in Civil War at the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas, in Company H 4th Iowa Regiment Infantry. Joined in Page County, Iowa.

  • Civil War Pension papers, WC143378 concerning the care of his three children, John L. Luellen born 02 Dec 1853, Sarah Jane Luellen born 15 Jul 1855, and William B. Luellen born 21 Jan 1857. Joel Helmick was appointed guardian.
  • In probate court records of Taylor County, Iowa, Box 33308, Cert. #143378, there are many records concerning the orphans of James Luellen.

James Luellen enlisted July 25, 1861 Hawleyville, Iowa, mustered into Co H 4th Iowa Inf August 15, 1861 and died at the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas, Mar 7th, 1862.

In a document concerning the guardians of the minors April 4, 1870 the following info was transcribed. “…the guardianship of John L. Luellen who was born in the county of Adams and state of Iowa on the 2nd day of December 1853 of Sarah J. Luellen who was born in the county of Page and state of Iowa on the 15th day of July 1855 and of William B. Luellen who was born in the County of Taylor and state of Iowa on the 21st day of January 1857 who are all of the children and all of the heirs at law of said James Luellen who was a private in Company H commanded by Eli More? Bungan? In the 4th Regiment of Iowa Infantry Volunteers in the war of 1861 and that the said James Luellen was killed in the battle of Pea Ridge in the state of Arkansas on the 7th day of March 1862 while in said battle of said service and in the line of his duty as such evident that the mother of his said wards Mary Ann Luellen died in the county of Achison and state of Missouri on or about the 27th day of January 1859 that the parents of his said wards were dead and legally married in the county of Page and state of Iowa on the 5th day of March 1853 by a justice of the peace that the date of birth of his said wards is as above set forth and as following: John L. Luellen was born on the 2nd day of December 1853 of Sarah Jane Luellen who was born on the 15th day of July 1855 and of William B. Luellen who was born on the 21 day of January 1857 that they are the only children of said James and Mary Ann Luellen & the only legitimate children of said soldier James Luellen that the parents of said wards were married as aforesaid and that there is no baptismal or other public record of the birth of said wards and that there was no physician in attendance at the birthing of any of his said wards that the age of such John Luellen can be proved by Johnathan Adams, Elizabeth & Jeremiah Teeters of said Sarah Jane by Johnathan Adams and Elizabeth & Jeremiah Teeters and of said William B. Luellen by Johnathan Adams and Elizabeth & Jeremiah Teeters person who were present and which is the best evidence that can be produced and that a mothers application has not provided this as their mother died as aforesaid before their father and had that his post office address in Memory, Taylor County, Iowa.
