Biography

Name

Her name appears as Aletha, Alethea and Lethe.

  • Aletha Ann Lewis [1][2] [3]
  • Aletha Ann Beall, after her marriage to Elisha Beall. [4]
  • Aletha Ann Bell, primarily by the family of her son Joseph after he changed the spelling and pronunciation of his family name to Bell. [1]
  • Alethea A. Beall. This form appears only after her marriage, and in census records. [5][6][7]
  • Lethe Ann Lewis. [8]

1804 Birth and Parents

Her birth date is uncertain, appearing as Dec 11, 1804 but without adequate sourcing. [9].

It appears as 1805, citing Schwartz. [10]

It can be calculated as 1806 in the 1850 Census [5]

It can be calculated as 1807 in succeeding censuses[6][4][7] and that year appears in Thomas Kelly's account. [11] The Bells follow that usage in their own genealogies. [12]

Her birth year can be calculated as 1808 from her tombstone, which indicates she was in her 74th year when she died June 28, 1881. That places her birth year as 1808. [13] She was the daughter of Jeremiah Lewis Jr. b. 8 May 1781, d. 5 Apr 1868 and Mary Windsor b. 30 Jan 1787, d. 12 Jul 1852 [12]

1823 Marriage

On December 12, 1823 in Montgomery County, Maryland, she married Elisha W. Beall (1800-1870). [13] He was the son of William Simpson Beall and Elizabeth Ellen Walker, on 12 December 1823 at Montgomery County, Maryland. [10][14]

If she was born in 1804, she was 19 when she married; if she was born in 1808, she was 15. This factor would favor an earlier birth year and later age at marriage.
