Discrepancy

No original source records have been located to confirm birth or marriage records. It appears that some erroneous information may have been published, and perhaps republished/reported, making the “actual facts” obscure. There is a great deal of conflicting information surrounding the Collins and Lewis Families of New Kent/Essex/Spotsylvania – Many Source-to-Source discrepancies; co-mingling, Lack of records; conflicting family stories; number of Collin’s with the same names, etc.

An Effort has been made to update/split individual information from the Contemporary Profiles frequently containing co-mingled data on the various "Joseph's, Richards, etc., (see individual profiles for more detailed information). See Also Collins Family Research Notes

Family Story

Family legend speaks of a Lewis connection to George Washington. Genealogy is not an exact science, but this is what I have found: Fielding Lewis, Sr. was Susanna's 1st cousin once removed (Susanna was the 1st cousin of Fielding's father, John Lewis). Susanna's son John was Fielding's 2nd cousin. Fielding married George Washington's 1st cousin, Catherine Washington, on October 18, 1746 (OS). (George would have been 15 at the time.) After Catherine's death, Fielding married George Washington's baby sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Washington, on May 7, 1750 (OS). (George would have been 19 at the time.) Susanna's niece, Ann Lewis, daughter of Zachary Lewis Jr. (Susanna's brother), married George Wythe.
George Wythe's signature is first among the Virginia signatures on the Declaration of Independence.
{https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meriwether_Lewis Meriwether Lewis], commander of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, was Susanna's 1st cousin twice removed (Susanna was the 1st cousin of Meriwether's grandfather, Robert Lewis). Anne Fairfax was Susanna's 1st cousin. Anne inherited Mount Vernon in 1752.

She leased it to George Washington until her death in 1761. George inherited it at that time. (See note under Mary Walker, Susanna's mother.)

This profile is the result of an erroneous merge between Lewis 3484 and Lewis 15238. Please be very careful of the information you take from this profile. Double check everything! I didn't merge this, and I don't know how to correct it.

Lewis-14950 and Robinson-9000 appear to represent the same person because: We meet again, Chet--These two probably should be merged, as the data appear to match, in general. Read your notes, and I agree--we need more primary sources.
