Biography
Charles Montgomery Gray Lewis was the son of William Lewis and his wife, Jane Matilda Smith. He was baptised at Sedgley, in Staffordshire on the 1st of November 1842 with his birth date given as the 15th of August 1842.[1]
1851 census: Sedgeley, Staffordshire, age 8, born Sedgley.[2]
On the 4th of June 1868, at St Giles in Camberwell, he married Emma Patten, daughter of Edward Henry Patten [3] and his wife, Charlotte Prall. Their marriage was registered in the Camberwell district of London in the second quarter of 1868.[4]
1871 census: Wingham, Kent, age 28, general practitioner, born Sedgley, Staffordshire. Wife Emma, 30, born Camberwell, Surrey. Children: Edith M G, 1, born Wingham; Guy M, 0, born Wingham. One assistant, four servants.[5]
1881 census: Wingham, Kent, age 38, general practitioner, born Sedgley, Staffordshire. Wife Emma, 40, born Jersey. Children, all born in Wingham: Edith, 11; Charlotte, 8; Norah, 7; Marian, 6; Arthur, 5; Margaret, 2. Six servants.[6]
1891 census: Wingham, Kent, age 49, general practitioner. Wife Emma, 51. Children, all born in Kent: Edith M G, 21; Charlotte R, 18 (mis-transcribed as 15 on FindMyPast); Norah E, 17; Marian, 16; Gwenllyan, 12. Four servants.[7]
1901 census: Wingham, Kent, age 58, surgeon, born Sedgley, Staffordshire. Wife Emma, 61, born Kensington, London. Children, all born in Wingham: Edith L, 31; Rose C, 28; Norah E, 27; Marian, 26; Gwen M, 22. Three servants.[8]
Charles's death was registered in the Cranbrook district of Kent in the third quarter of 1924.[9]
