Biography

Margaret Lynn Lewis was born about 1726 in County Donegal, Ireland. She was the daughter of of John Lewis and Margaret Lynn.[1][2] She was probably around four when she embarked for America with her mother and siblings.

Sometime around 1755, Margaret married William Long.[3] They had one son - William Jr.

Her husband William died around May 1760 (his will was executed on April 16, 1760, and probated on May 20, 1760). He named Thomas Lewis and Charles Lewis, his brothers-in-law, as executors.

Sometime in 1761, Margaret married William Crow, a merchant in Staunton, Virginia. (William took out a marriage license in Augusta County, Virginia, in April 1761).[4] They had five children - Thomas, John, Andrew Lewis, Margaret (Peggy), and Nancy.[5][2]

In the will of her father, John Lewis, which was executed on November 18, 1761, she is identified as his "daughter, Margaret Crow", and left a bequest of 30 pounds.[6] On November 19, 1768, William Crow, Margaret Crow, and Thomas Crow sold land on Craig's Creek which three years earlier had earlier been patented to William and Thomas.[7]

William Crow (possibly) died in Virginia about 1795, and Margaret allegedly moved to Kentucky, where she died about 1797 at the age of 87 years. There is a Find a Grave for Margaret that lists her death 1797 in Adair County, Kentucky, Virginia, but there is no source provided for this information, nor is there a burial location. [8]

Notes

Her uncle Dr. William Lynn arrived in Virginia sometime before 1727, when he and two other Lewis men - Robert and William (no known relation to her father John Lewis) - petitioned the Governor for 50,000 acres of land on the Cow Pasture and James Rivers, "lying among the Great North Mountains."[9],[10]

Lewis-27250 and Lewis-17026 appear to represent the same person because: Same year of birth, same father (Lewis-440), same marriage date and spouse name (1761, William Crow), but unfortunately there also are duplicate profiles for William. Crow-1774 (William Crow aka Crowe) and Crow-4448 (simply William Crow) also need to be merged.

Lewis-27250 and Lewis-17026 are not ready to be merged because: After reviewing Lewis-27250 I am making this an unmerged match. Researchers for this Margaret Lewis had proposed these were two different people and make changed to this profile to reflect their research. Since then, others have changed the profile to make it match Lewis-17026. So before we proceed with merging, need to find out if Lewis-27250 is going to reflect a second Margaret Lewis or not.

Sixteen months have passed, and no source has been provided connecting this Margaret Lewis to John Lewis and Margaret (Lynn) Lewis. Therefore, the couple have been removed as Margaret's parents.

Hi Keith. Before completing any merge with Lewis-17026, please provide actual sources for Margaret's purported marriage to William Long. If there are none, then either (1) the merge should NOT be completed, or (2) the merge can be completed IF William Long is removed as her husband and William Long (Jr.) removed as her son.
