Biography

George Herbert Lewis was baptised at Sedgley, Staffordshire on 25 August 1846, with his birth date given as 4 June 1846.[1] His birth was registered in the Dudley district of Staffordshire in the third quarter of 1846.[2]

1851 census: Sedgley, Staffordshire, age 4, born Sedgley.[3]

1861 census: Sedgley, Staffordshire, age 14, born Sedgley.[4]

In 1866 he entered St John's College, Cambridge.[5]

He was ordained deacon at York in 1871 and priest the following year. He held the following church positions[5]:

  • 1871-4: curate of St Michael and All Angels, Neepsend, Yorkshire
  • 1874-9: vicar of Thurgoland, Yorkshire
  • 1879-80: chaplain, Poona, India
  • 1880-3: chaplain, Nimach, Bombay, India
  • 1883-4: chaplain, Quetta, India
  • 1884-6: chaplain, Bombay, India
  • 1886-7: chaplain, Colaba, India
  • 1887-8: curate, Croxall, Derbyshire
  • 1888-9: curate, Huntspill, Somerset
  • 1889-91: chaplain, St Paul's, Poona, India
  • 1891-3: chaplain, Deesa with Mt. Abu, India
  • 1893 and 1895-8: chaplain, Ghopuri, India
  • 1893-4: chaplain, Bombay, India
  • 1894-5: chaplain, Aden
  • 1898-9: chaplain, Ahmednagar, India

He was licensed as a priest in the diocese of Bath and Wells from 1899 to 1921.[5]

His marriage to Frances Cayley de Wend was registered in the Marylebone district of London in the first quarter of 1879.[6]

His death age 88 was registered in the Axbridge district of Somerset in the fourth quarter of 1934.[7] He died at Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset on 7 November 1934.[5]
