Rowland Lewis was christened 11 Apr 1825 in Towyn Parish, County of Merioneth, Wales (today in Gwynedd County, Wales). He was the son of John Lewis and Elinor, daughter of Lewis Jones of Newtown in the same Parish. He married Anne Fagan 13 Mar 1850 in Liverpool, England, where he was a milk dealer at the time. Arriving in New York, they settled at Utica, New York. In 1858, they moved to Judson, Blue Earth, Minnesota and had a farm there.
On 16 Jul 1863 he submitted a claim for losses during the Sioux Outbreak of August 1862. At the time of the outbreak he had resided 4 years in the town of Judson, Blue Earth, Minnesota. In the deposition, he said 'he had left his property 19 Aug and went to South Bend with his family, was back and forward on his farm during the fall, but did not move back with his family until last Spring, that he used due diligence to save his crops and that he had 3 acres oats, had lost a half acre of sorghum, intended to cut 20 to 25 tons of hay and did not cut any, had to sell some of his cattle to buy feed for the others and had 2 acres of buckwheat all lost.'[1]
He served in the Civil War at Fort Snelling in Co E, 2nd Reg Cavalry, Minnesota Volunteers. The family moved to Tarrant County and then to Weatherford, Texas, where Rowland and Anne celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
