Biography

According to John's marriage record, his father and mother were William D. Lewis and Mathilda Weakley. According to john's death record, his father and mother were Ben Lewis and Matilda Meamley. We can be sure that his mother was Mathilda, but his father is a bit of a puzzle. If we look at the records for William D. Lewis, we find that he married Lucretia Emerson in 1870 at McClean, Illinois, Mathilda Weakley in 1874 at Randolph, Illinois, and Sarah J. Carr (probably about 1885 at Chicago, Illinois). There was a Benjamin Lewis living at Franklin County, Illinois in 1860, but there are no records tying him to John Hardin Lewis (other than John's death record). We might conclude that William D. Lewis was not a devoted husband and father, but was John's father, nonetheless.
