Flora (Lewis) Chestnut is a part of US Black heritage.
Flora was born enslaved in May 1855 in Horry County, South Carolina. She was living with her parents, Smart Lewis and Dillon Vereen, in 1870.[1] By 1880, she had married Sam Chestnut and they were living in Little River, South Carolina and raising a family.[2][3][4]
There is a possibility that the oldest son, Joseph, was born to a different mother, but his death certificate names Flora. The problem is that in the 1900 US Federal census, Flora is noted to be the mother of eleven children, all of whom were living. The only child not appearing in census records with their parents is James, but his death certificate names both parents.
