Biography

Metta was born in 1870. She is the daughter of Myron Lewis and Almeda Bright. She appears to have married twice. She is indicated as divorced in the 1900 census, and marries Amos Yokes in 1902. They adopted Margaret Cely. Metta died in 1927 in an ambulance in route to the hospital.

Andover: One woman was killed & another seriously injured when the auto in which they were driving into town from Richmond Saturday afternoon was struck by the NY Central Buffalo-Pittsburgh flyer at the North MainSt crossing.

METTA YOKES--57: widow of A. S. Yokes, died in an ambulance on the way to Ashtabula General Hosp. Her companion Mrs. Darl Steadman, driver of the car, was taken to Brown Memorial Hosp-Conneaut suffering from injuries which may cause her death. Mrs. Steadman is 50. Both women, neighbors in Richmond, were on their way to Andover on a shopping tour when the accident occurred. Their vision was said to have been obscured by a milk train standing on a siding at the North Main St crossing. The flyer struck the car in the middle & hurled it a considerable distance. When picked up, Mrs. Yokes was believed at first to be less seriously injured than her companion. She was placed in the Robert Ellis ambulance & started for Ashtabula, but died before reaching Dorset. Her body was returned to Andover & placed in the Ellis undertaking rooms. Mrs. Steadman was rushed to the hosp at Conneaut. Her injuries consist of several extended cuts below the left eye & another under the chin. Her right wrist was fractured & a great toe had to be amputated. The automobile was demolished.

The funeral of Mrs. Yokes will be held Tues afternoon at the home in Richmond. Interment in West Williamsfield Cemetery. ^[1]
