Biography

Albert Lewis was born in Boston, Massachusetts, about 1833, the son of Simeon and Martha Lewis.

He married in 1854 to Susan Augusta Millen, daughter of Daniel Millen.^[1] They were living in Malden, Mass., in 1860 with their 4 year old son William. Albert worked as a ship chandler, which is a dealer in supplies and equipment for ships.

He enlisted to serve in the Civil War as a 28 year old merchant. He mustered in as a Private in Company I of the Massachusetts 8th Infantry on April 30, 1861. He was discharged on August 1 of the same year. He reenlisted later that month and mustered in as a Private in Company D of the Massachusetts 19th Infantry at the end of August 1861. He was discharged at Washington, D.C. on March 12, 1864.^[2]

After the war, he lived in Boston. In 1870, he was an agent for an oil company.^[3] His parents, Simeon and Martha, lived with him and his wife and their two sons, William and George. In 1880, Albert was employed as an editor.^[4]

His wife died in Washington, D.C., in 1895 and she is called a widow at that time.^[5] He is most likely the Albert H. Lewis, age 58, who died there on January 3, 1892.^[6]
