Biography
Merzie Mabel Lewis was born in Whittier, North Carolina. There were apparently no records kept and only by discussion with her older siblings did she finally settle on June 25th 1897 as her approximate birthdate. Her mother was Polly Jane Crane and her father Joseph Samuel Lewis. Merzie had 9 siblings; 2 died as infants, leaving Jim, Mac, Alex (Alexander), Joe , Beth, Polly, and Bertha. It is believed Joe, Bertha and one of the infants that didn’t make it were younger than Merzie. She loved the North Carolinian Hills and woods. She told many stories of her very young life there to her son. Like her first try and chewing tobacco, the rattle snake her father killed and hung over a door and its tail still reached the floor, playing “going abroad” with her brother Joe, her sister Polly scaring them silly by saying the sawmill boiler was going to blow up, she and Joe setting out to in the woods but returning home when night fell.
