Biography

Rebecca was born in 1863. She was the daughter of Ben Lewis and Eleanor Turner. Benjamin Lewis passed away Feb. 1, 1866, in Glasgow, Howard County, Missouri.[1]

In 1870, Eleanor Lewis (43, widow) lived in Chariton Township, Howard County, Missouri, with her children, Richard E. (13), Rebecca (7), and Annie E. (5), as well as her stepson, James B. (21). Eleanor is recorded only as Mrs. B.W Lewis. The household also included eight Black employees: Chas. Pearce (33, farm hand), Pollie Pearce (40, domestic servant), Laura Pearce (12, domestic servant), Harden Pearce (10), Mary Pearce (2), W. Turner (38, coachman), Bettie Turner (34, domestic servant), and Maria Turner (27, domestic servant); and one white employee: M. Ditzler (40, seamstress).[2]

In 1880, Eleanor Lewis (52, widow) lived with her daughters, Rebecca (16) and Ann (15), in Chariton Township, Howard County, Missouri. The household included five Black employees: Delcy (?) Lewis (42, housekeeper), Ann Lewis (9), Patty Birch (18, housekeeping), James Edwards (21, coachman), Edward Lewis (20, farmer); and two white employees: Peter Kay (30, gardener) and Mary Walsh (22, seamstress).[3]

Rebecca married Lewis D. Dozier on June 1, 1886, in St. Louis, Missouri.[4] The couple had four children: Lewis Dozier (1887-1969), Mary Dozier (1889-1898), Eleanor Dozier Stickney Tilton Gerlach Bradford (1894-1989), and Anne Lewis Dozier (1895-1899).

Rebecca passed away Jan. 5, 1899, in St. Louis, Missouri.[5] She is buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery, Saint Louis, St. Louis City, Missouri.[6]
