Biography

1680 Birth and Parents

Jonathan Lewis' parents are uncertain and none are connected on WikiTree at this time; see Research Notes for the alternate theories.

Mike Marshall reports Jonathan Lewis was born about 1680 in Calvert County, Province of Maryland. [1]

Birth Year Estimation

Since Jonathan’s first child was born about 1706, assume his marriage to Mary about 1705. If Jonathan was 21 at the time, he was born not later than 1684, and Mary, if 18 in 1705, was born in 1687. Make him 25 at his marriage and he was born in 1680.

1705 Marriage to Mary

Marshall identifies Jonathan's wife as Mary, married to Jonathan before 1706 in Queen Anne Parish, Prince George's County, Maryland. Marshall does not identify her family; he estimates her birth as before 1690, in Prince George's County, Maryland.[2].

Marshall believes the marriage took place before 1690, however if Jonathan was born 1680, that is too early, and the births of the children begin in 1706. A more reasonable marriage date would be 1705, when Jonathan would have been aged 25, with the children's births beginning the next year.

1716 Jonathan Lewis Plantation and Rolling Road

On Mar 27, 1716, the Maryland General Assembly held court, and "the Rolling Road from Jonathan Lewis' Plantation to Marlborough Town was ordered laid out."[3] This would be in the area served by St. Barnabas Church, Queen Anne Parish, Prince George's County, where the children were baptized.

1719 Collington Hundred

In the 1719 Tax List of Prince George's Co. Jonathan Lewis is shown residing in Collington Hundred. A Joseph Belt is also shown residing in that area. [4] More about Collington at Space: Collington Land Tract, Prince George's County

1722 Death and Estate

Death

Jonathan Lewis had died by 7 July 1722 when his name appears in Prince Georges County Testamentary Proceedings, Liber 26, Fol 19 (Abstract)[3]

He can be presumed dead by 1721 because by the end of the year his wife Mary is pregnant with children of Mr. Beckett.

1722 Remarriage of widow Mary to Humphrey Beckett

By March 1623 Jonathan's widow Mary had remarried. She bound their two youngest sons, twins Jonathan and David Lewis ( b. 1718), into the care of William Mordaunt, until age 21; They were about five years old at the time. In court, Mary gave her name as Mary Beckett.[3]

After Jonathan, Sr., died, his young widow had married a man by the name of Humphrey Beckett and their twin sons, Humphrey and Benjamin were listed in the parish register as born 18 Dec 1722.)[3]

Jonathan's own estate took several years to settle, and was not final until about three years after his widow Mary had apparently remarried and become Mary Beckett. [10] There obviously would have been a strong motivation for Mary to remarry, since Jonathan had left her with a family ranging in age from 18 to 2.

Laura Lewis suggests that recent correspondence with Gary Beckett suggests that Mary's subsequent husband might have been Humphrey Beckett II, who lived in Prince Geoge's County during the same time period, and married a woman named "Mary." Mary Lewis Beckett gave birth to twin sons (Humphrey III and Benjamin, born 1722 in St. Barnabas Parish, PG Co. [11]

Settlement of Jonathan own estate was not final until about three years after his widow Mary, remarried to Mr. Beckett, possibly Humphrey Beckett II, b. G1697 [12]

Children of Jonathan Lewis and his wife Mary

Jonathan Lewis and his family are listed in the records of Queen Anne's Parish in Prince George's County, Maryland. [2]

Research Notes: Who were Jonathan Lewis' parents?

Several credible theories have been proposed but none have yet been established as fact.

Jonas Lewis?

Robert Lewis writes, "My theory is that this Jonas (I) was the father of Jonathan Lewis,( b. ca 1685. d. by 1722)." [17] This would be Jonathan Lewis, who would then be the son of Jonas rather than, as present, the son of John. Robert Lewis suggests then that Jonathan was the son of an additional child, named Jonas after his grandfather. [19]

Children of Jonathan Lewis and his wife, Mary, from St. Barnabas Church, Queen Anne Parish, Register (Prince Georges Co., MD) [3]

(Note: Queen Anne Parish was formed in 1705 from St Paul's Parish, so it's Register would not list any children of Jonathan and Mary born before 1705,)

John Lewis?

Marshall identifies Jonathan's father as John Lewis, born 1661 in Calvert County, Maryland, and died 20 Apr 1711 in Prince George's County, Maryland (Probate) (Age 50 years) . Marshall does not give a name to Jonathan's mother but estimates her birth at 1664 in Calvert County, Maryland and her death as about 1702 in Prince George's County, Maryland (Age ~ 38 years) Marshall estimates their marriage to be about 1680 in Calvert County, Maryland [1]

Thomas Lewis and Rebecca Timothy?

Thomas Lewis, b. PGC 1663 and Rebecca Timothy, b. 1660, d. PGC 1724

In support of this parentage:

  • Supported by Kim Lewis [21]
  • Supported by Hurley, p. 11, who has Thomas Lewis b. 1659 and Rebecca Timothy b. 1660, reporting notes of Janice Beall Taylor.
  • Was in Queen Anne's Parish, Pr. George's Co, and had issue listed in St. Barnabas Parish Register, and named his oldest son Thomas. [22]
  • Was probably a son of Thomas Lewis of Charles and Prince Georges Co, d. 1726, and Rebecca (surname unknown). Jonathan died young, by 1724, apparently predeceasing his father.  : [23]
  • "Jonathan was a son of Thomas Lewis, Jr., of Charles and Prince Georges Counties, b. 1659 and d. 1726, and Rebecca Timothy, b. 1660. [24]. The will of Thomas Lewis records four daughters, but no sons, however will is 2 years after Jonathan's death. J. C. K. Lewis (Patriarchs, p. 146) believes there is a possible connection because Jonathan Lewis was in Queen Anne's Parish, Pr. George's Co, and had issue listed in St. Barnabas Parish Register, and named his oldest son Thomas.

In opposition to this parentage::

  • Only one child – May – is listed in death documentation.
  • The will of Thomas Lewis records four daughters, but no sons, however thie will is two years after Jonathan's death.

Thomas Lewis of Battersea, Broad Creek?

Thomas Lewis and the Lewis family of Broad Creek, PGC

In favor of this parentage:

  • Jonathan is thought by some researchers to have been a son of Thomas Lewis, Jr, of PGC, d. 1696. [25]

In opposition to this parentage:

  • The evidence for a blood relationship between Jonathan Lewis and the Battersea Lewis line is purely circumstantial. [26]
  • Other children are named in Thomas’ 1695 will but not Jonathan.

Thomas Lewis, Jr..son of Thomas?

In favor of this parentage

  • I wonder if he might have been a grandson of Thomas Sr and a son of Thomas Lewis, Jr, d. 1726. If Thomas, Jr, of PGC was Jonathan’s father, he would have predeceased his father by two years, meaning he died relatively young. This could explain why Jonathan is not named in Thomas Jr’s will. [27]
  • Son of Thomas Lewis, Jr, d. 1696, and thus a grandson of Thomas Sr, . Laura Lewis Watkins states: Jonathan is thought by some researchers to have been a son of Thomas Lewis, Jr., of Prince Georges Co, MD, d. 1696. However, I wonder if he might have been a grandson of Thomas, Sr., and a son of Thomas, jr, d. 1726. If Thomas Lewis, Jr., of Prince George's County, was Jonathan's father, he would have predeceased his father by two years, meaning he died relatively young. This could explain why Jonathan is not named in Thomas Lewis, Jr's, will. (Genforum, Lewis, 7909, Sept 11, 2000). Golng by the evidence I have, Jonathan Lewis was probably a son of Thomas Lewis of Charles and Prince Georges Co, d. 1726, and Rebecca (surname unknown). Jonathan died young, by 1724, apparently predeceasing his father.

John Lewis and his Unknown first wife?

Jonathan Lewis was previously connected as the son of John Lewis (Lewis-791) and his first unknown wife. (John Lewis later married Elizabeth Houser -- not Elizabeth Horner.

In support of this parentage

  • Norma Lindgren believes Jonathan to be a son of son of John Lewis, and Elizabeth Horner. [8]
  • Mike Marshall believes his father was John Lewis (Lewis-791) b: 1661 in Calvert County, Maryland, and his mother was John Lewis's first wife, name currently not known, born about 1664 in Calvert County, Maryland. [1]. Other theories show Jonathan to be the son of John Lewis and his wife Elizabeth Horner.

In opposition to this parentage

  • John’s 1710 will lists no children. His widow’s deeds of gift to her children in 1711 do not include a Jonathan.

In 1711, Jonathan Lewis would have been 31. It could be that his greater age excludes him from incusion in his father's widow's deeds of gift -- or some other reason.

Jonas Lewis and John Lewis might be brothers.

Robert Lewis [17] has observed that two Lewises, Jonas and John, both were transported to Maryland in 1676 and their land grant record is the same liber and folio. From this, Lewis suggests that they were brothers who both came from Bristol, and possibly Wales, arriving in 1676. [30]

This Jonathan Prather had six children, probably by Lyle Jane McKay,and all of them were under 14 when he died. Prather’s widow, "Jane," m.
