Robert Lewis of Granvil is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A070116.

Colonel ROBERT LEWIS of Granville (b. 1738/9 in Hanover Co, VA,[1] m. Sept 3, 1760 d. Nov 7, 1780 in Granville Co, NC) and (Mary) Francis Lewis (b. Aug 1, 1744 d. ca. 1791 ) (first cousins). Referred to as "Col Robert Lewis" and "Colonel of the Granville militia". Delegate from Granville to the Constitutional Convention which met in Halifax, North Carolina on November 12, 1776. Recognized by the D.A.R. as a revolutionary patriot.

Robert (Robert of Granville) (b. 1738/9 in Hanover Co, VA), married Sept 3, 1760 (Mary) Francis Lewis. They were first cousins. (Mary) Francis Lewis, the daughter of Charles Lewis and Mary Howell) was born August 1, 1744 in Goochland County, Virginia. Charles Lewis and Mary Howell Lewis occupied the Byrd (Bird) Plantation, and are said to have had 10 children.[2] The book "Lewis of Warner Hall" by Sorley gives eight children, but some of these may be incorrect, as they are not currently accepted by the DAR in later research.[3] The children shown by Sorley are: James, Howell, Jane, Nicholas, Charles, Frances, Dr. John and Richard. That list does not entirely match with the list shown here, in that Sorley does not show William and Robert, but sons James and Richard are shown.

  1. William Lewis, c. 1762, VA, died by August 1792, Orange County, NC

  8. John Lewis, married Rebecca Latimer Posey (DAR #42795)

Some trees show the following additional children:[2]

  • James Lewis, c. 1761, VA, married Susanna Anderson (DAR #96987) - DAR records say that he was not the son of Robert Lewis of Granville, but a son James Lewis is mentioned in Robert's Will.[4]
  • Joseph (?) Lewis, c. 1775, married Elizabeth Walker (DAR #248328) - not included in probate records, although he was young enough that he should have had a Guardian

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Robert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Robert:

Wendy,

You care correct, there are more children that there should be. A couple have been added since I last looked at this profile, and a couple came with a merge. I will double check and propose removal of the ones who don't belong. Your previous message showed 8 children. What source did you use for them? Thanks, Vic

My lewis brother did the YDNA testing in 2004, assuming we were connected to Robert Lewis. We are direct descendants of james lewis and ann eliz. Stewart. The YDNA testing proved our james to be the son of Gideon Lewis, brother of James Theophilus Lewis.

Also, if james lewis was listed as executor on Robert's will, he would only be 13 years old. James lewis b. 1767 married to Ann Eliz. Stewart can't be the son of this Robert Lewis.
