from page 117,
August 5th, 1910, J. W. Boyd Mining Company, Ameron No.2 mine, Sarcoxie; roscoe Johns, age 23; occupation, machine helper; Henry Burden, age 32; occupation, sininking winze; Pete Lewis, age 35; occupation, sinking winze; all were killed by being overcome by foul air.
Remarks by Inspector Wallace. “Upon investigation I found that a winze was being sunk in a drift at the Cameron mine, the intention being to drift back under the shaft from the winze and then upraise, thus sinking the shaft without being bothered with water. Lew and Burden were doing the work on a contract and had fired four very heavy holes in starting the drift from the bottom of the winze. These holes were fired by them upon coming out of the ground at supper time on the night shift. A full hour was taken for supper, and when they returned to the ground it was supposed that the smoke and gases from the shots had cleared from the winze, as they had never been bothered by smoke and gases hanging. Lewis was being lowered by Burden, by means of a windlass, and when about half way down fell off the rope. Burden, not thinking of foul air, but thinking that perhaps Lewis had been knocked off by a boulder falling from near the top of the Winze, called to the others to let him down quick, as Lewis had fallen from the rope. When he was about twenty feet down he called that the air was bad and for them to pull him up fast. This was done, but before he reached the top, he, too, fell off the rope. Johns lost his life in much the same way in an effort to rescue the other two. After the three men were down in the winze, hose from the machines were attached to the air line at the top of the winze, then lowered to the bottom and the gases cleared out within a minute, so that the bodies could be recovered. If the precaution had been taken to do this before attempting to enter the winze after shooting, this sad accident would have been avoided. Then Johns, in attempting a rescue where foul air was known to exist, should have tied himself
