Dear Kids,
I wanted to get this in with your xmas but didn't have it typed when Mommie got the other things mailed so I am sending this latter: Please excuse the mistakes in the typing and spelling but don't have time to do it over or have it done over. My friend typed it for me and it was done in such a hurry; That is our excuse. We are enjoying a lovely afternoon today just reading writting and sleeping when we are not eating. Surely would love to see my little Shelley on xmas morning: Love to see you all. You can let Kathryn read these papers if she would care to. I am not sending her any but if she cares for any of them I'll get them but I have a complete set and when I go they will all be hers as I hope this start you will now have will be added to as you desire to add to it. With love and the deepest wishes for a lovely xmas, a very nice holliday and a Prosperous new year is in my heart. Kiss each other for grandpa. God bless you.
Love Dad
"A few of the memories in my life"
For a long time I have had a desire to add a few incidents that has been related to me of my grandfather by my mother and father, but being a poor writer I have neglected to write until the dates of these following incidents have entirely slipped my mind.
While I was only seven (7) years old when my grandfather (William Hendricks Lewis) died, I have a very clear picture of him in my mind. Large of stature, raw boned, straight as a stick, thin faced with a head of snow white hair and a full beard and mustache that matched. Large eyes that seemed to see everything around him at the same time.
His athletic figure and movements with pleasant smile, and the heartiest "Hallo Libbie and Riley" as my father and mother were called Libbie and Riley. Then if I was around his large hand was always placed on the crown of my head and with a circular motion, pulling my hair terrifically would add, "how are you, my little man?"
The most outstanding thing I can remember is of the incident that father has told me after he (grandfather) was called to be a Bishop of the little hamlet that later was named after him (Lewiston). The place he was called to preside over was called Little Egypt because of the sand hills and sagebrush. Grandfather was the fourth family to move on the flat and his first year on the flat he planted his grain three different times because the wind blew it out. Being very discouraged and feeling that it was impossible to live in such a place in answer to his prayers a conference was called and Apostle Golden Kimball was sent to preside at that conference. After a series of Priesthood meetings, stake conference meeting and some prayer meetings, grandfather and brother Kimball was seated on the front porch of grandfather's home and brother Kimball looking out over the fields of sand and seemingly worthless country, for some eight to ten minutes, turned to my grandfather and said, "Bishop Lewis, don't get discouraged, you will be blessed for I have just seen this flat as it will be in the very near future. Fields of grain and hay and pastures filled with horses and cattle and a network of railroads will cover the flat and horseless chariots will be innumerable." I don't know how much of this my grandfather lived to see, but I know my father lived to see it literally fulfilled and did own some of that land which produced abundantly. The railroad came on the flat and spread over the flat serving three sugar factories, Gathering sugar beets from all directions to deliver to the factories. As for the horseless chariots (the automobile) begun to show up about 1910 and now they have reached almost the innumerable stage. There are other interesting phases of his life such as when he was on the underground and my father was his only contact, keeping him in touch with his family and returning with advice and instructions to the families. Grandfather had three wives. My grandmother, Martha N. Petty, his first wife, and Aunt Julia Bright, the third wife and Aunt Eddie as knew her the second wife. I want to add here that to my own knowledge each of the three families, at grandfather's death, was left a good home and 140 acres of good land. There are other interesting happenings in his life that I remember but not well enough to relate them. Grandfather's love of animals and for sports, horse racing, foot racing, and wrestling and his desire for fair play and determination to be fair and to see that everything he was connected with was run on an honest and fair basis. These are some of the memories I have of my grandfather Lewis. My grandfather Hendricks I never knew so well.
While dwelling on memories I would like to relate a few that makes my own father so dear to me. He inherited all the honesty and desire to be fair to others that his father had. He lived the Gospel by doing unto others as he would be done by. I don't think he ever had an enemy. Father used to jockey when horse racing was the main sport and was run for the sport. He was an excellent horseman having ridden all his life. The real beginning of his experiences was at about 15 to 18 years of age, he carried the mail from Lewiston to Richland, a distance of about 6 miles on horseback. The winters being very cold and the winds severe and he had to leave about four a.m. to get the mail in on time so the first thing he did was to draw a bucket of water for his horse and one to step in. As he wore leather boots the water would freeze on the boots almost immediately and form the best insulation he had ever found. Often having his fingers frostbitten but never his feet. He has told me of the many times while crossing the flat, as it was then called, he would scare up a coyote and having a fast and well trained horse he would pull off one of his boots while the horse was following the coyote and then use his boot to hammer the coyote and running the horse over it would add another coyote hide to his collection.
When he married my mother he bought his first boughten or factory made suit. There was not such a thing as a stingy hair in his head. I well remember of three widows that lived in our ward, Sisters Champion, Jensen, and Rogers, every fall we boys were sent to put a load of coal and a load of kindling wood in their sheds. Each spring, we, my three brothers and I, were sent to rake up the leaves, clean the yard, and plow the garden spots for the good women. I have heard them express their thanks to my father with tears in their eyes and I have enjoyed many a cookie and pieces of home baked sweets for my services which was very good pay.
Another time that I remember of his outstanding generosity was when one of the ward members, being a harness maker by trade and supporting a family of one boy and ten girls, had a fire that completely destroyed their home. The ward meeting was called to decide what could be done for Brother Nielson's family. Father went to the meeting but his three teams and five men went to the burned home and began the cleaning up work, and he was followed by others and in less than a month the Nielsons had a new home of which my father took the lead in doing the work and contributing heavily to the financing for the materials. Again his trust in mankind was displayed to me by an instance of having signed a note for a Mr. Hoppie to buy a set of plumbing tools. The man was unable to meet the note when came due and the company (George A., Lowe) foreclosed and father had to pay the note. The company wanted him to take the tools from Mr. Hoppie but he just said, "how can the man work without his tools?" and left them with Mr. Hoppie. About a year later Mr. Hoppie came to father, paid him all he owed and expressed his gratitude and thanks for father having trusted him and said, "Riley, the trust you put in me made me determine to see that you wouldn't lose one cent." Father not only got his money back but had the love and greater respect of another family. Many of the men that knew father have often said that if all men could be as big as Riley there wouldn't be any needy at all. This used to sound strange to me as a young man for father never weighed more than a 105 lbs. usually 101 lbs. but now I know what they meant for he truly was big in many ways. To me that was his mission to give to the less fortunate, pay his tithing and pray for everybody and for every good cause. I write this with fondest memories and with a sincere prayer that whomever may read it will have a desire to do good and receive the blessings that comes from living the Golden Rule.
Written this 15th day of November, 1953. Alfred Marion Lewis
[Handwritten note at the bottom] Grandfather (William H. Lewis) made eight trips across the plains to help the saints between the years 1860-1865.

A Blessing given by Hyrum G. Smith, Patriarch, upon the head of Alfred Marion Lewis, son of Neriah Robert Lewis and Elizabeth Mahala (Hendricks) Lewis born October 2nd, 1897, at Lewiston, Utah.
Brother Alfred M. Lewis: According to thy desire and by virtue of the Holy Priesthood I place my hands upon thy head, and as the Spirit of the Lord shall direct me, give unto thee a blessing for thy comfort and benefit throughout this life according to thy faithfulness. Thou art of the lineage of Ephraim; born of goodly parents; an heir through faithfulness, to the blessings, gifts and privileges as they have been pomised through the New and Everlasting Covenant. And i say unto thee, hold sacred thy birthright; honor the Holy Priesthood which has been given thee, as well as the teachings of thy parents. And through thine obedience in following the whisperings of that Still Small Voice, thou shalt be blessed in health and in strength and be given privileges and opportunities to carry out thy righteous desires, and shall be directed to the doors of those who are seeking to know the Truth; and shall pass by dangers in safety, and be called into positions of responsibility among thy fellows. And through thine obedience also in observing the laws of Nature and the Words of wisdom thou shalt be given health and strength and be made equal to every responsibility required at thy hands in order to fill up the full measure of thy mission upon the earth. And I say unto thee also, be diligent in study, as well as humble in prayer and careful in observation. For much is required at thy hands in order to perform the labors which are required of thee in order to fulfill thy mission. Shrink not from thy duties when they are made known, and thou shalt be blessed with the gifts of the Gospel necessary to teach and defend the Truth under all circumstances. And thou shalt go about from place to place attended by the preserving and protecting care of the Lord. And in due time, be given a companion of thy choice for the journey of life, with whom thou shalt be blessed with the comforts of a humble home, and a choice posterity, through which thy name shall be honored in the midst of thy people from generation to generation.
This blessing I seal upon thy head through thy faithfulness. And I seal thee up even unto eternal life to come forth in the Resurrection of the Just -- a savior in the House of Israel, with thy kindred and many friends, by virtue of the Holy Priesthood and in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen. Approved: Hyrum G. Smith.
