Biography

Chiya Sora was born in Suwałki in 1832.^[1] She was the daughter of Abram Lewitański and Itka Paryski.

The name of Chiya Sora's first husband was Josiel Dawidowicz Sapiro^{[2] [3]}. She bore him several children, but they all passed away when infants; then her husband passed away. Chiya Sora married Meyer^[4], who was both her uncle and her second husband. He was her father's brother. Several children were born of this marriage but only the two youngest, Benjamin and Joseph, survived. She spent the latter years of her life with Mayer Yossel at the home of her stepson, Boruch Yehudi (Julius) Levine, in Boston, MA, where she passed away.^[5][6]

When Chaya Sora and Mayer Yossel's son Benjamin was born the services of a wet nurse were engaged. Benjamin was Chaya Sora's first child who survived through babyhood. When Joseph was born, they again faced the problem of a wet nurse. At that time, Mayer Yossel's daughter-in-law, Rifka, was expecting her first child. Three months later Joseph had the distinction of being nursed through babyhood by his sister-in-law, Rifka.^[7]
