Biography
Joan was the daughter of Christopher Leyland and Helen Cayley. The 1901 census lists her at Ancroft, Northumberland, age 5, born Ancroft.[1]
The 1911 census lists her, age 15, at a school at Winkfield, Bwrksgire, with her birth place as Haggerston, Northumberland.[2]
