She died in 1266 and was buried in the Monasterio de Santa María de Nogales in León with Pedro.[3]
Research Notes
She may have first been married to Diego Foilaz, lord of Mansilla y Rueda. I have not found a source for this, but I did find a source listing Diego Frojaz (Portuguese spelling) as her mother's husband and Aldonza's step-father.[4]
Any individual who can trace a documented lineage back to Francisco Montes Vigil (abt.1665-1730), born in Zacatecas, Mexico, is confirmed to be a descendant of Charlemagne (abt.0748-0814), Holy Roman Emperor, through Aldonza Alfonso de León.[5][6] Aldonsa is Francisco's 12th great-grandmother.
After Nathan W. Murphy finished verifying the sources for each generation, he entered most of the information and sources into the database of Genealogics (accessed 26 Mar 2024).
The naming custom of this time was (given name) + (father's given name patronymic + location). So Pedro was named "Pedro / Ponce de Cabrera" and Aldonza was "Aldonza / Alfonso de León." However, their children adopted a new naming standard: (given name + father's given name patronymic) + (permanent surname Ponce de León). So their eldest son was named "Fernán Pérez (patronymic of Pedro) // Ponce de Leon." By the next generation, the patronymic name was dropped and they just used (given name) + (Ponce de León).
