He then began working for women's fashion partnership Farmer & Rogers, and is listed on the 1861 census as an assistant to a silk manufacturer. 40-year-old John Weeks was living at 54 Baker Street in Marylebone, London, England, with his wife and two children, eight assistants (of whom Arthur was one), five servants, plus a governess.

Also in 1875, Arthur set up Liberty & Co in Regent Street, London, England. He began by selling ornaments, fabrics and miscellaneous objets d'art from the Far East. Between 1890 to 1920, he sold Liberty fabrics, which became known for their vivid and/or subtle colours, printed on satins and silks. These beautiful fabrics became known worldwide.

DEATH OF SIR ARTHUR LIBERTY
The death occurred on Friday at Lee Manor (Buckinghamshire), of Sir Arthur Lasenby Liberty, at the age of 73. Sir Arthur Liberty was the chairman and founder of the firm of Liberty and Co., and his title to fame rests upon the lasting impress which his personality has made upon the dress good trade, and especially upon silks and fabrics in which silk are a component, and soft woollen goods. He was the eldest son of Mr Arthur Liberty, lace manufacturer, Nottingham, and was born at Chesham, Bucks [sic], on August 13, 1843.
