Biography

Frances was born January 3, 1912 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States.[1] Her parents were Samuel Lichtman and Esther (Deitel) Lichtman.

In 1915, Frances (shown as Francis, age 3) lived at 196 Bay 26th Street in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States with her father Samuel (age 45), mother Esther (age 32), half-sister Selma (shown as Schna, age 15), and siblings Benjamin (age 9) and Gladys (age 7).[2]

In 1920, Frances (age 8) lived in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States with her father Samuel (age 55), mother Esther (age 36), half-sister Selma (age 20), and siblings Benjamin (age 14), Gladys (age 11), Herman (age 2), and Arthur (age 1).[3]

In 1925, Frances (age 13) lived at 57 Bay 26th Street in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States with her father Samuel (age 57), mother Esther (age 43), and siblings Benjamin (age 19), Gladys (age 16), Herman (age 8), and Arthur (age 7). Her paternal aunt, Rose Solomon (age 60) and a boarder Max Rothstein (age 58) also lived with the family.[4]

In 1930, the family's last name was incorrectly shown as Lichman. Frances (age 19) lived at 57 Bay 26th Street in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States with her father Samuel (age 62), mother Esther (age 46), and siblings Gladys (age 22), Herman (age 13), and Arthur (age 12). Her father was a real estate broker, Gladys was a secretary, and Frances was a typist in a lawyer's office.[5]

Frances married Sam Rich March 4, 1934 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States[6] and they had two children (see Research Notes).

In 1940, Samuel (age 32) and Frances (shown as Francis, age 28) lived in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States with daughter Judith (age 2). Carmen Garcia (age 25), a maid, also lived with the family.[7]

The family lived in Yonkers, Westchester, New York, United States from before 1945 until about 1950. When Samuel's doctor prescribed a warm, dry climate to mitigate the impact of a medical problem, Samuel and Frances divested themselves of all their New York ties and possessions and moved to Tucson, Pima, Arizona, United States. Their extended family gathered at a restaurant for a farewell lunch, then said final goodbyes at Grand Central Station in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States, where they boarded the train and waved to them when the train left until their window was out of sight.[8]

Frances and Sam bought property in Tucson, Pima, Arizona, United States, and arranged to have their new home built. Frances, an excellent typist, wrote long and frequent newsy (more accurately characterized as gossipy) letters to her sisters and brother, using several layers of carbon paper, but the recipients of the last couple of carbon copies often had difficulty reading the fuzzy type. With great gusto that was her hallmark, Frances rapidly became a pillar of Tucson social life at the start of its era of rapid growth, in which Tucson became a mecca for escapees from colder climates. Frances and Samuel only returned to New York a few times, for brief visits, on major family occasions (i.e., graduations, weddings, births, and funerals).[8]

Frances was bright, energetic, warm, vibrant, and eternally optimistic. Throughout her life, she served as the central clearinghouse keeping her siblings all connected. It was a very sad irony that not only her zest for life, but also her faculties, deteriorated drastically in her declining years.[8]

Frances died September 7, 2004[1] in a nursing home in Tucson, Pima, Arizona, United States and was buried in block 28 of the Evergreen Memorial Park there.[9] Her obituary was published September 9, 2004.[10]
