Biography

Adam Licklider was born March 6, 1798, and baptized April 9, 1798 at St John's Lutheran Church in Creagerstown, Frederick County, Maryland, a son of Conrad Leichleiter and Anna Margaretha (Froshour) Leichleiter. The sponsors at his baptism were George and Sussana Lechlieter. On November 30, 1820,in the Zion Lutheran Church, in Middletown, Maryland, Adam married Elizabeth Powell, daughter of Thomas Powell and Hannah (Templin) Powell. Children of Adam and Hannah are:

  • Grandison Templin Licklider, born June 12, 1823, in Shepherdstown, Virginia, died April 6, 1903, married Amanda Samanna Humrichouse, on November 4, 1847
  • Thomas Licklider, born February 5, 1825, married Ruehame Marshall
  • Ann Catherine Licklider, born May 18, 1828, died October 24, 1846

  • Loyd Licklider, born October 20, 1835, died January 4, 1914, at the Confederate Soldier's Home, Richmond, Virginia

Adam Licklider died January 10, 1868 and was buried in the Lutheran Cemetery, in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. [1] The state of West Virginia had been created June 20, 1863, because Virginia was a Confederate State and many in this part of Virginia sided with the sentiments of the Union. Unfortunately, Adam and his family did not.
