John Liddicoat was born about 1829 at Cornwall, England in the hamlet of Retea(r)th in St Columb, baptised 20th March 1831 in St Columb. He married Gertrude Hocking on 8th March 1851 at Cubert, St Columb, Cornwall, England, shortly before emigrating on the "Marion" to South Australia. The Marion was shipwrecked off the coast near Edithburgh, on what is now called Marion reef. After the grounding the couple were separated. Gertrude with some 70 women and children was taken by longboat across the St Vincent Gulf to Cape Jervis. Gertrude later found employment as a housemaid on a farm on Yorke Peninsula and that by coincidence, husband John arrived one day and was taken on by the farmer as a labourer. John Liddicoat passed away on 20th August 1907 at Wallaroo, South Australia, Australia.
