This next obituary record states that his mother was Margrette Damman Lieflander, but this may be his step-mother. According to his birth record, his mother was the German-born Regina Cleveland. She was also mother to his brother August Lieflander. There is the possibility that her full name was Regina Margrette Damman, and that her first husband's surname was Cleveland, but barring that, these are two different women. The couple was divorced and his father remarried by 1900, when his wife is identified as Margaret. It's also possible that Regina was deceased and Margaret was his step-mother. If Regina died before 1900, Margaret would have been the only mother he ever really knew. Oddly there is a Regine named in the 1900 census, but she is presented as a 13-year-old sibling to 8-year-old William and 5-year-old August. She is too young to be the mother of either child unless her age is incorrectly stated and she is misidentified as a sibling rather that his mother.
