James was born about 1823 at Stainburn, Yorkshire.
He married Sarah Mortimer on 24 January 1820 at Otley, Yorkshire. [1] Their children were Nancy Light, Eleanor Light, Sarah Light, James Light, Elizabeth Light, William Light and Hannah Light.
In 1841 at the time of the census he was living with his family at Westgate, Otley, Yorkshire
In 1851 he was working as a woolcomber and the family still lived at Westgate, Otley, Yorkshire
