Biography

Nellie was born in 1913. She was the daughter of Alvie Lightfoot and Alice Featherston. She passed away in 2000.

"As recalled by Shirl Miles Kuykendal from an interview that she had with Nellie Joe Lightfoot in the 1990's: "Freeman School Number 61: Freeman was a few miles south of Hamilton, between FM 218 and FM 2005. There were 7 grades in Freeman School in 1911. Edgar Bynam Pruett was the teacher at Freeman School in 1912. Mrs. J. C. McPherson taught at Freeman School in 1924-1925 when John Featherston, W. M. Thompson and A. R. Lightfoot were on the school board. According to Nellie Jo Roberson, her parents, Alvie Richard Lightfoot and Allie Alice Featherston, along with 3 other groups of families left Anderson, Texas in wagons headed for Hamilton County, Texas, sometime in the spring of 1919. The families moved in order to rent farm land on the Freeman Farm, near Schoolerville in Hamilton City. Allie's uncle George Washington Featherston was the overseer for the farm and held the places for them until they arrived after 3 long months, arriving in the fall of 1919. The other families making the move were Robert "Bob" Bradford Moss and his wife Nancy Dervy Featherston (sister of Allie Featherston Lightfoot), Thomas Scott Hancock and his wife Dora Etta Featherston (sister of Allie Featherston Lightfoot) and Elzie Bedford Fitzgerald and his wife Eva Lightfoot (sister of Alvie Richard Lightfoot). Eventually the Fitzgeralds and the Hancocks moved back to East Texas. The Lightfoots and Mosses stayed in Hamilton County, Texas." ^[1]
