Dow L Lighthall[1] was born in 1809 in New York.

They had (at least) thirteen children, five of whom died young.

In c. 1846, the Dow and Lucinda and their children moved to Michigan. Hester stayed in NY and lived with her grandparents.

In 1850, Dow Lighthall, age 41 was living in Mundy, Genesee, Michigan, where he was living with Lucinda and five children, Luther, 14, Levinia, 10, Laura, 8, Sarah, 6, and Sabrina age 3. the last two were born in Michigan.[2]

In 1860, Dow Lighthall was living in the home of his married daughter Lavina Oliver, 21, her husband, their three children, and her unmarried sister Sabrina.The family was living in Saginaw, Saginaw, Michigan. On property valued at $200 dollars and dow had personal property valued at $50 dollars and also working as a farmer.[5]


Enlisted in Company F, Michigan 1st Engineer Regiment on 29 Oct 1861 in Saginaw, Michigan as a private.[1].

Mustered out on 09 Jun 1862 at Nashville, TN[1].

Between 1860 and 1870, Dow married Margaret Phillips, a widow with five children.

By 1870, dow, age 61 was married to Margaret and living in Caseville, Huron, Michigan, where he was working as a Farmer & PM, on real estate valued at $1200 dollars and had personal property valued at 300 dollars. He owned 160 ac, ten were improved and 150 ac were woodlands.He owned 3 milk cows and 7 other cows and one swine all valued at 272 dollars. There were 20 bushels of oats that were produced.[6][7]

On 19 Mar 1872, Dow L Lighthall was the postmaster in Bay Port, Huron, Michigan[8].

The probate was done on 7 June 1875[9]

Lighthall Name Meaning

English: possibly a habitational name from a place called Lightollars in Lancashire, so named from Old English leoht ‘light-colored’ + alor ‘alder’. The surname, however, is not found in current English sources.
