Ernest was born in 1886. He was the son of James Lightowlers and Lucy Wood. Ernest and his family moved to Simon's Town, Cape Province, South Africa in late 1891. [1] Ernest and his brother Victor Lightowlers were privates in A Company of the Simon's Town Home Guard during the Boer War (1898-1902). [2] Ernest Lightowlers was also registered as a Trooper no. 31509 in the Kimberley Light Horse unit from March to October 1901, although he was only 15 at the time [Casus Belli website]. He passed away on 2 June 1903 of tuberculosis after four months of illness and was buried in Seaforth Cemetery, Simon’s Town – known as the old burial ground.
