Biography

Ernest was born in 1886. He was the son of James Lightowlers and Lucy Wood. Ernest and his family moved to Simon's Town, Cape Province, South Africa in late 1891. ^[1] Ernest and his brother Victor Lightowlers were privates in A Company of the Simon's Town Home Guard during the Boer War (1898-1902). ^[2] Ernest Lightowlers was also registered as a Trooper no. 31509 in the Kimberley Light Horse unit from March to October 1901, although he was only 15 at the time [Casus Belli website]. He passed away on 2 June 1903 of tuberculosis after four months of illness and was buried in Seaforth Cemetery, Simon’s Town – known as the old burial ground.
