Biography

This biography was auto-generated by a GEDCOM import.[1] It's a rough draft and needs to be edited.

Sarah Ligon was the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Batte) Ligon.[2]

She was the daughter of Mary (Tanner) and William Ligon.[citation needed] - Note: Dorman has her as the daughter of William and Mary (Tanner) Ligon's son William and his wife Elizabeth Batte.[2]

Sarah Ligon married Henry Ligon. [3]

Her husband Henry Ligon (Sr.) made his last Will on 12 Nov 1759 and he died about 1762 in Prince Edward County, Virginia. His ten slaves and other property had a value of £521:5:3.

In 1767 as the widowed head of household, she was charged with four tithe able slaves and 318 acres of land in Prince Edward County, Virginia.

Her husband's last Will was recorded on 14 Dec 1769.

On 04 July 1784 she made her last Will which stated that after her death, she did not want her estate to be appraised.

Not long after, she died in Prince Edward County, Virginia and her last Will was recorded in Jan 1785. Against her stated desire, the Prince Edward County court ordered an appraisement of her estate, which valued twelve slaves at £631.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Sarah by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Sarah:

Ligon-244 and Ligon-173 appear to represent the same person because: similar dates, Ancestry.com has her as the child of the parents shown on Ligon-244

Hi Rebecca! I can't find anything that supports this Sarah who married her cousin Henry was the daughter (instead of granddaughter) of William and Mary (Tanner) Ligon. Dorman says William and Elizabeth (Batte) Ligon are her parents. I don't have access to the other source - Ligon Family and Connections. Could you check to see who that source gives as her parents?

Thanks!

Tanner-804 and Ligon-244 appear to represent the same person because: Dorman identifies wife of Henry/mother of Henry & William as Sarah Ligon. DAR records for sons Henry & William say birth years were c1735 & c1737, which match with the 1734 marriage date that was added for Sarah Tanner. If you have proof for Tanner as LNAB, please post it (and let me know via private message or on my profile page - I'm not a manager of these profiles so I won't be notified of a posting). Otherwise, please merge. Thanks!

Note: The date of her will (written 1784), lends support that she was daughter of William and Elizabeth (Batte) Ligon, not William's parents. William and Elizabeth married "1702-1704", so Sarah would have been born after 1700, making her lifespan more realistic - c1710-1784/5 instead of c1686-1784/5.

Dorman has her parents as William & Elizabeth (Batte) Ligon. See Research Notes added to her husband's profile.

update: research done. Need to discuss parents.

I think there might be some confusion/conflating... or maybe just disputed info?

Mother "Virginia Elizabeth Batte" Batte-112 was detached. Sources listed on her profile include Douglas Richardson's Magna Carta Ancestry.

I'll do some research on her later today & see about getting her profile in better order so that we can see what's up with the William Ligons/Sarahs in this family.

Cheers, Liz

Ligon-253 and Ligon-244 appear to represent the same person because: same name, same father, exact same spouse, both profiles created on same date in 2015. Mother is different. These look like same person with wrong mother on one. Incorrect mother should be removed so the profiles can be merged.
