William Ligon Jr was born in Powhatan County, Virginia on 24 November 1762.[1][2] He was the son of William Ligon and Frances Moseley Ligon, who were under-age when they married. His father William Sr died while still under-age, leaving William and his sister Sarah as minor orphans. (Their mother Frances was also still under-age). Guardianship was appointed to Richard Ligon, grandfather of Sarah and William. [3]
Revolutionary War
In 1779, William was drafted into the Revolutionary War at 17 years of age. He was an infantry soldier on the Virginia Line. He served 4 tours as a Revolutionary War soldier, in the capacity of Infantry, Artillery, and Cavalry. On May 15, 1781, he was engaged in the Battle of Guilford Corthouse. The battle was technically a British victory, but it cost British General Cornwallis 25% of his men. [[1]]
William married Ann Davenport.[2]
William Ligon passed away on 4 March 1841 in Owen County, Kentucky.[2]
William's DAR record shows a daughter, Martha Hale Ligon, who married Thomas Morgan. However, the entry is marked "error in lineage" with a note that William married Ann Davenport, not Ann D. Moseley, who is shown as the mother of Martha Ligon.[2][4]
