John was born in 1812 in Kelso, Roxburghshire, Scotland. His parents were Thomas Lillie and Barbara Clark.[1]
He studied at the University of Edinburgh before going on to complete his theological training in the USA, where he remained the rest of his life. From 1835 he was pastor of the Reformed Dutch Church in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and from 1858 he was minister of the First Presbyterian Church in Kingston, New York. His biblical commentary lectures were published and are still available.[2]
He married Sarah Maria Hasbrouck in 1839. Children:[3]
He was awarded the Doctorate of Divinity (DD) by the University of Edinburgh in 1855.
He passed away in 1867 and is buried at Houghtaling Cemetery.[4]
In Memoirs of an Irish Manse (William Corkey, 1961) John is described as a cousin of another famous Dr John Lillie DD out of Kelso - this one became head of the Presbyterian Church in Tasmania. While it doesn't seem their fathers were brothers, they may well have been 2nd or 3rd cousins.
Corkey also makes references to the Lillies of Kelso being descended from Huguenot refugees, although nothing to corroborate this has emerged.
