Biography

Georg Friederich Lÿmbach (1734-c.1811), aka Frederick Limbaugh, was a German-born pioneer to the United States who immigrated to the colony of Pennsylvania as a teenager with his parents. A church baptismal record documents that he was born on or just before 14 Oct 1734 to Johannes Lÿmbach, a weaver of linen, and Maria Margaretha Listerer in Hüffenhardt, Baden, Heiliges Römisches Reich.[1][2]

He arrived from Rotterdam via Cowes on the ship Brothers at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with Johannes Limbach, on 26 Sep 1753.[3][4] He was approaching 19 years of age at the time. Johannes was documented as age 29 then.[3] [Note: the age given is problematic, as Johannes was probably closer to age 44 by this time.] Females are not listed on the passenger list, but Maria Margaretha almost certainly accompanied them.

Frederick married Anna Catharina Ritter on 9 Apr 1758 in Colebrookdale Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.[5]

Their known children are Johannes Limbaugh, George Frederick Limbaugh Jr, Peter Limbaugh, Christian Limbaugh, Henry Limbaugh, and Michael Limbaugh.[2]

Frederick was naturalized on 21 Sep 1767 at the Supreme Court of Philadelphia, Province of Pennsylvania as a resident of Upper Milford Township, Northampton County.[6]

On 17 Mar 1770, he purchased land from his father-in-law Paul Ritter in Upper Milford Township.[7]

Frederick served as a major in the Northampton County 2nd Battalion in the Pennsylvania Militia in 1777-1778 during the American Revolutionary War.[8]

He was a county committee member[7] and justice[9] in Northampton County.

In Dec 1787, Frederick sold his real property in Northampton County and left the area.[7][2]

In 1789, Frederick, son Fredrick Jr, and their families were living in Botetourt County, Virginia.[10]

Frederick, living in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, was summoned there in 1793 and 1796 as a juryman.[11]

About 1800 he settled with his sons Frederick, Jr. and Michael in the Cape Girardeau District of Louisiana New Spain (Luisiana, Nueva España) which late that year became French Louisiana (la Louisiane française).[12]

He was a teacher and associate judge in Cape Girardeau District.[12]

The last known record of Frederick Limbaugh Sr. is in German Township, a Cape Girardeau District court record summary paragraph signed by him on 16 Mar 1811.[2] He was also likely appointed a township justice in German Township, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri Territory on 1 Apr 1813.[13] He may have died shortly after that.

Research Notes

On 1 Apr 1813, Fred Limbaugh was appointed Township Justice, German Township, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri Territory.[13] While this could be Frederick Jr., it is likely Frederick Sr., since he served as a justice throughout his life.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Frederick by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Frederick:

Based on his baptismal record, I plan to change his LNAB to Lÿmbach.
