Torgny's debut came 1965 with the poetry collection "Plåtsax, hjärtats instrument" but it was the book "Ormens väg på hälleberget" from 1982 that won him national and international breakthrough. For "Batseba" he was awarded the highly acclaimed French literature award "Prix Femina" in 1986.
He was also active within the social democratic party and was heavily influenced by philosophy and his christian beliefs. 1980 Torgny converted to the roman catholic church and lives with his wife Stina and three childen, Aina, Ylva and Torgils.
