Emily was born in 1882 in Iowa, the daughter of John W.S. Lindley and Elizabeth D. Robinson.
In 1885, the Lindley family lived in Humboldt, Iowa. The household included John W.S. Lindley, 41, born in Ohio; his wife, Elizabeth D., 31, b. Iowa; and their four children, all b. Iowa: Effie G., 12; Alice, 10; Robert, 8; and Emily F., 2. [1]
The Lindley siblings, Artie, Alice, Effie, Emily, and Robert Walker Lindley are mentioned as surviving children of a Union Civil War veteran.[2]
In 1895, the Lindley family lived in Humboldt County, Iowa. The household included John W. S. Lindley, 51, born in Ohio, a Baptist, who served in the Civil War (the War of Rebellion) as a Corporal with A Co, 14th Iowa Infantry and K Co., 7th Iowa Infantry; his wife Lizzie D., 41, b. Johnson county, Iowa; their children, all b. Iowa: Alice, 20, b. Johnson county; Robert W., 18, b. Polk county; Emily, 11, b. Humboldt County; and Artie, 8, b. Humboldt county.[3]
Emily was born in 1883. She passed away in 1972. [4]
Emily T. Lindley, 16, the daughter of J.W.S. Lindley and Lizzie Robinson, married Joseph P. Metcalf, 28, on 6 June 1899 in Cosmopolis/Grays Harbor, Washington [5]
1900: Emily lived in Washington State with her first husband, Joseph P. Metcalf. She was 17, and he was 29. They had been married about one year, and had no children. They rented their home, and both could read and write. [6] They later had two children.
Emily and Joseph divorced. She moved to Los Angeles with her children before 1910. Emily later married BAILEY.
In 1910, they lived at 425 California St., Los Angeles, California. Four households resided at this address, all renters. Emily Metcalf, 27, divorced, a department store saleslady, lived with her children, Ruth, 9, and Scott, 7. [7]
Emily married PHILLIPS, and was widowed by 1920 (according to Census data).
In 1920, they lived in their rented home at 2214 Toberman, Los Angeles. Emily Phillips, 36, a widow, born in Iowa (parents b. Iowa); lived with her son, Scott Metcalf, 16, a student, b. Washington (parents b. Iowa), a cutter at a market. Emily was a photographer at a photographic studio. [8] Note: this census was taken on 15 Jan. 1920.
Emily’s father, J.W.S. Lindley was born 24 May 1834 in Ohio, the son of Thomas Lindley and Abigale Able. He was married and retired, aged 76, when he died at 2214 Toberman, Los Angeles, California at 2am, 24 February 1920 (the day after his wedding anniversary). J.W.S. died of cerebral apoplexy, complicated by arteriosclerosis. He (and his wife) had been living at the Toberman Street residence for seven days. He was buried in Centralia, Washington.[9] NOTE: Lindley may have been in Los Angeles on vacation, or visiting family there when J.W.S. died (his daughter Emily and her children lived at the Toberman address when Lindley died there). They may have come to LA to enjoy the warmer, drier climate for the winter. Lindley’s widow Lizzie later returned to the E. Main St. house, and was living there with their daughter Effie when Effie died of tuberculosis in 1921.
The building at 2214 Toberman, Los Angeles Was built in 1907. It is a small 2-4 unit apartment building near University Park. It is a stout, stucco structure with a flat roof.[10]
Emily F. (Lindley) Bailey, 40, married Charles James Toon, 39, on 16 Jan 1924 in Los Angeles county, California. Emily was born about 1884 in Iowa, the daughter of Scott Lindley and Lizzie Robinson. Charles was born about 1885 in Indiana, the son of Charles Toon and Effie White. Both bride and groom were residents of Hawthorne, CA. Witnesses were Mrs. Alice L. Seibert (Emily’s sister), 5334 Myers Pl., Inglewood, CA; and Mrs. Eleanor Spidel, 515 Acacia St., Hawthorne, CA. The Rev. A. P. Rossier officiated. [11]
1930: she was 47yrs and lived with her 2nd (3rd) husband, Charles Toon and her widowed brother Robert Lindley in Inglewood, California. Their rent was $35, and they owned a radio. [12]
1940: Emily lived at 941 E. Whitmore, San Gabriel, California with her husband, Charles Toon. They rented a house (for $10/mo), where they had lived for at least five years. Charles attained 2 yrs of high school, and Emily, 3 yrs. of high school. Charles was a plumber, who had been unemployed for 26 weeks during the previous year. He earned $600 in 1939. [13]
Emily’s husband Charles died in late 1940.
Emily applied for delayed birth certificate in 1943 when she was 59. There is a sweet note on it from her sister Alice (68) who was her witness (see image). [14]

Emily was born in in 1882, and she died, aged 89-90, in 1972. She is interred at Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum, Altadena, Los Angeles, California. [16]
NOTE: Emily’s birth year is recorded variously as 1882, 1883, 1884.
The family story was that Emily ran a brothel in Los Angeles after she left her husband, and moved to LA with her children. If true, her 1920 occupation as a photographer may have been a cover for what she really did for a living. There has been no family story that she ever worked as a photographer.
