Nathaniel Lindley was born on 29 November 1828 and was baptised on 26 December 1828 at Chiswick, Middlesex, England[1]. He was the second son of John Lindley and Sarah Freestone. His father was Assistant Secretary to the Horticultural Society.
He was educated at University College London, London, England. He was admitted to the Middle Temple in 1850 entitled to practise as a Barrister-at-Law.
In the 1851 England Census Nathaniel Lindley (aged 22 and a Barrister) was recorded living with his parents John Lindley (52 and a Professor of Botany) and Sarah Lindley (56) at Acton Green, Middlesex. Also in the household were his two sisters Sarah Lindley (24) and Barbara Lindley (21), as well as visitor Henry H Crease (26 and a Barrister) and servants Hannah Courgton (27) and Diana Davis (22).
On the 5th inst., at Roundhay Church, by the Rev. W. H. Teale, vicar of Roystone, and the Rev. Alfred Barry, Head Master of the Grammar School Leeds, NATHANIEL LINDLEY, Esq., of the Middle Temple, only son of Professor Lindley, F.R.S., to SARAH KATHARINE, eldest daughter of the late EDWARD JOHN TEALE, Esq., of this town.[3]
They had nine children, three of whom died relatively young:
In 1875 he held the office of Justice of the Common Pleas in 1875; he was a practising Serjeant-at-Law in 1875 and was appointed Knight Bachelor in 1875.
Nathaniel held the office of Judge of the High Court, Common Pleas Division between 1875 and 1880, and he held the office of Judge of the High Court, Queen's Bench Division between 1880 and 1881. He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1881. Between 1881 and 1897 he held the office of Lord Justice of Appeal, and he held the office of Treasurer of the Middle Temple in 1892.
He held the office of Master of the Rolls between 1897 and 1900.
Nathaniel Lindley was created Baron Lindley, of East Carleton in the County of Norfolk [U.K. Law Lord] on 10 May 1900. He held the office of Lord of Appeal in Ordinary between 10 May 1900 and 1905.
In the 1911 England Census Nathaniel Lindley (aged 82 and a Retired Lord of Appeal in Ordinary) was recorded living with his wife Sarah Katherine Lindley (80) and their unmarried daughter Jessie Louisa Lindley (48) at The Lodge, East Carleton, Norwich, Norfolk. Also in the household were her two granddaughters Mary Edith Gull (23) and Amy Beatrice Gull (22), as well as seven household staff.
He passed away on 9 December 1921[4] and was buried on 13 December 1921 with his late wife at St. Mary Churchyard, East Carleton, South Norfolk District, Norfolk, England[5].
