John was a Friend (Quaker)

John A. Lindley (1830-1911) was the son of Aaron and Ann (Lindley) Lindley. John married three times:

  • m1) Nancy Ann Hollowell (1838-1867), married on 22 February 1854 in Lick Creek, Orange, Indiana. They had five children, born between 1856 and 1867.
  • m2) Mary Catherine Hutsler (1845-1889), had three children, John Exum, Lucius B., and Rufus E.
  • m3) Deborah Alice Newlin (1862-1927), married on 15 November 1900 in Orange, Indiana. [1]

John A. Lindley, 1830-1911, the son of Aaron Lindley and Ann Lindley, was born and died in Orange County, Indiana. He married three times. John is buried with family at Lick Creek Friends Cemetery, Chambersburg, Indiana. [2]

In 1850, the Lindley family lived on their farm in Paoli, Orange, Indiana. The household included Aaron Lindley, 48, born in North Carolina, a farmer, with $1500 in real estate; his wife, Ann, 43, born in NC; their children, all born in Indiana, all in school, except for the eldest one and the youngest two:Mary, 23; John, 19, a farmer; Samiria D., 18; Ruth A., 7; Elwood, 4; and Hiram B., 1. John Lindley, the son of Aaron and Ann; and Nancy Hollowell, the daughter of Nathan and Nancy, were married on 22 February 1854 at Lick Creek Monthly Meeting (Friends Church), Orange County, Indiana. The ceremony took place in the presence of eighteen signed witnesses. [4]

In 1860, the Lindley family lived on their farm in Paoli Township, Orange, Indiana. All members of the household were born in Indiana. The family included John Lindley, 30, a farmer, with $1400 in real estate and $700 in personal estate; his wife, Nancy A., 21; their children, Isabel, 4; Nathan A., 2; and Martha E., 1. [5]

John Lindley and Mary C. Hutsler were married on 18 December 1869 in Orange County, Indiana. Justice of the Peace, Jonathan McVey, officiated. [6]

In 1870, the Lindley family lived on their farm in Paoli Township, Orange, Indiana. All members of the household were born in Indiana. The household included John Lindley, 39, a farmer, with $2000 in real estate and $1000 in personal estate; his wife, Mary C., 24; and children, Isabelle, 14; Nathan, 12; Martha, 10; Homer, 8; and Catherine, 3. Lindley, 50, a farmer; his wife, Mary, 34; their children, all in school, except the youngest one, Homer, 19, a farmer; Exum, 8; Lucius B., 7; and Rufus, 2. Living nearby was John’s brother and his family. This household included Samuel Lindley, 55; Mary J., 41; and nine children. [8]

In 1900, the Lindley family lived on a farm in Paoli, Orange, Indiana. All members of the household were born in Indiana. All of the adults could read and write. The family included John A. Lindley, 70, born in June 1830, a widower, a farmer, who owned his farm without a mortgage; his son, Lucius B. Lindley, 27, b. Jan. 1873, a farm laborer; his wife of six years, Anna E., 28, b. Feb. 1872, who had had two children; their children, Harry A., 5, b. Feb. 1895; and Olive O., three months, b. Feb. 1900. [9]

John Lindley and Alice Newlin were married 15 November 1900 in Orange County, Indiana.

In 1910, the Lindleys lived on their farm in Paoli, Orange, Indiana. They owned their farm without a mortgage. The household included John A. Lindley, 79, born in Indiana, a farmer; his wife of ten years (second marriage for both), Alice, 48, born in Indiana, who had had no children. [10]
