Joab Lindley was the son of Lt. Levi Lindley and Abigail Hill. He was probably born in Wapole in 1798. On 22 August 1821 he married Nancy Bent in Providence, Rhode Island.[1][2][3]Joab and Nancy had four children: Warren Joab Lindley (1822-1875), Charles Decatur Lindley (1824-1862), Nancy Maria (Lindley) Bumpus (1826-1909), and Henry Clay Lindley (1829-1895). Joab was a carpenter and Sailor who made frequent trips to the Caribbean Islands. On 10 Feb 1832 he died at sea from small pox, near Matanzas, W.I..[4][5][6]
As of August 2011, the evidence remains circumstantial implying he is the son of Levi Lindley from Walpole and Abigail Hill. His marriage record indicates he is from Walpole. Abigail may have only been 35-40 years old when she married Levi. Levi’s first wife, “Molley, or Mary Smith”, died in 1792. I did find the evidence that Levi’s son named Joab born in 1770, whose mother was Molley Smith, died in 1793 in Union, Maine. The 1800 Federal Census for Dedham supports two children under 10 living with “Levi Lenley” as head of the household. Those children are most likely Joab and Julia. The other two females are most likely Abigail (Hill) Lindley and Lona Lindley, Levi’s youngest daughter with Molley Smith, just before she marries Samuel Cleveland. The 1840 Census for Dedham has Abigail Lindley still living in Dedham and this is verified by Congressional Records (see notes on Abigail (Hill) Lindley. Most likely the second female living with Abigail is Julia Lindley, a school teacher, who dies in 1842 of consumption. In the foreword for the Vital Records of Walpole to the End of 1850 it indicates parts of Dedham were annexed to Walpole. I suspect Levi’s part wasn’t but he clearly associated his name with Walpole throughout his life and was buried in the Old Walpole burial ground. A review of Joab Lindley’s estate settlement, probate case A5285, in Providence dated 26 April 1830 did list Julia Lindley as a suretie, but did not state the relation between Joab and Julia. Additionally, Julia’s name may have been crossed out and she did not sign at the bottom. Other than stating “Nancy Lindley”, the probate case mentions no other relatives.
Per one descendant: As far as going back in New Bedford history - my family goes back 12 generations to about 1660 - it was called Dartmouth back then and one of my ancestors Constant Southworth negotiated the purchase from the indians. I too have a few ancestors who were whalers - Leonard Luscomb my great-great grandfather was Master of the ships Timoleon and Kingston both out of Fairhaven in the 1840-1851 time frame (prior to that he was a ship's cooper on several others), Abishai Hayden of Nantucket sailed on various vessels in the 1830 to 1850 period, Joab Lindley my great-great-great grandfather died at sea in 1829 and my great grandfather Frank Gurney was a lumber supplier who built whale ships and whaleboats in the 1870s. Whaling lore has long been a favorite subject in my family and I still have many artifacts passed down from the vessels they were associated with . . .more Joab Lindley was the father of my Great - Great grandmother Nancy Maria Lindley Bump. All I have ever been able to determine was that he was a sailor who died at sea. Some records indicate that he may have come from the Natick area originally but I have never found a conclusive link to his father.
In 1825 he is listed as a 28 year old Carpenter on the Ketch George bound for Matanzas.
In Nancy Maria (Lindley) Bump’s Death record she lists her father’s birthplace as Wrentham, Mass. He appears to be living in Dedham in the 1800 census. Dedham and Walpole town lines appear to fluctuate during this period. His marriage record cited in several sources indicated he was from Walpole.
Arrived in Boston on the ship Hope and Polly, 14 May 1822. He is listed as a 24 year old carpenter from the United States.
Estate was in probate in 1830 in Providence, R.I. case A5285. I, Richard Bump, have thoroughly reviewed this case. Initially Julia Lindley was listed as a surety in the case and then her name was scratched out.[7]
UNLIKELY: May have been enlisted in the Army 16 June 1813 and served one year, but he would have been about 15 when he enlisted. The record was poorly documented and this could be a Joab Lindley from New Jersey.
