Biography

The records of the Wicklow MM of the quakers have the following entry: "James Linley the son of John Linley was born in Cheshire in the year 1641 and came into Ireland in the year 1670. He took to wife Alice the daughter of Thomas Wilsmith born in Yorkshire."[1]

This is the only thing known of John Linley.

Is there any evidence for the name of his wife? If there isn't we should disconnect her.

There is a record on Ancestry, "England, Select Marriages, 1538-1973" for the marriage. I believe that is probably how this got into a number of family trees. I don't know details of that source on Ancestry.

Could we change his primary name to John? The only real sourced evidence I know of is as John. See http://woodlin.net/lindley/1880.htm. I believe Billie and Andrea need to do that. See below also

Well, I have no objection if other don't. The evidence looks reasonable to me.

We should consider changing his name to John, unless there is some evidence for James. Quaker records have the father of James Lindley Sr as a John Lindley (actually, Linley) of Cheshire:

James Linley's( Sr.) entry was on page 49 of that book as follows:

"James Linley the son of John Linley was born in Cheshire in the year 1641 and came into Ireland in the year 1670. He took to wife Alice the daughter of Thomas Wilsmith born in Yorkshire." This was followed by a list of James' and Alice's children, Martha,James,Thomas, and Mary, with their birth date and locations exactly as listed below from t

Lindley-794 and Lindley-458 appear to represent the same person because: The father of James Lindley Sr (b.1641, Cheshire) is listed in Quaker records as John Lindley of Cheshire. He is my direct paternal ancestor

Lindley-46 and Lindley-458 appear to represent the same person because: James Lindley Sr (born 1641) and Alice Wilsmith are the parents of James Lindley Jr (b 1681, Ireland), and Quaker records have James Sr's father as John, from Cheshire. I know of no documentation of James' father being a James Issac.
