Biography

Carl Ernst was born in 1868. He was the son of Euphron Carl Anton Lindner and Friedrike Henriette Hädrich. He passed away in 1943.[1]

Carl arrived in New York on the ship SS Westphalia, july 6 1881. If you search Castel Garden you can find the rest of the family. Family search also have the passanger lists. [2] The SS Westphalia sailed from Hamburg via Havre to New York. The records say he's born 1872 which would make him 9. But the family records have two Carl Ernst one born 1968 and one 1965. The older one emigrated to Australia and the Younger to US but the birth years don't match the passangerlist (the family is listed together if you look at the microfilm)

1885 Anton and Henriette are living in Jersey City, District 04, Hudson, New Jersey. Their children Hugo an Ernst and a Carl (these boys are both called Carl and Ernst, one is called Carl Ernst the other Ernst Carl, there is no way of knowing who is who and which stayed in the US and which emigrated to Australia). Also living with them are Ella, Ida and Helen.[3]

1905 is probably the year Carl (36) decided that Carl was to german a name to be able to use it. He is in this census called Chas Lintner. He is living with his wife and family Dora(34), Herbert(10) and Clifford(7) in Essex, New Jersey. One can understand he need to Americanize the name. [4]

In the 1910 census Charles E Lindner is living in East Orange Ward 5, Essex, New Jersey, United States with his wife Dorothy Lindner and their sons Herbert M LIndner (15) and Clifford S Lindner (11). They seem to live close to the Auffingers to are noted right above the Lindners with Elisabeth Auffinger as head of family, Lena a dressmaker and Isabelle a stenographer.[5]

1920 Charles E Lindner (53) head if the family is living with his two sons Herbert (25) (Hubert) and Clifford (20) and his daughter-in-law Edith N Lindner(24) (Herberts wife). We find out that Ediths father is from Massachusetts and her mother is from Conneticut. They live in East Orange Ward 5, Essex, New Jersey[6]

In the 1930 Census we have a Charles Lindner (61) Proprietor born 1869 who is married to a Grace (Greene) Lindner (34). Living with them is Grace's father William Greene (74) born in Scotland. Teaneck, Bergen, New Jersey, United States. The birthdates of Charles and Grace correspond somewhat, but I will need another source.[7]

Research Notes

According to M. Johansson who has read the family files about the Lindner line, The siblings where born in Niederleupten, Altenburg and not in Münsa, Altenburg. Need to confirm this as the family tree (probably derived from the same paperwork) say Münsa.
