Biography

Alexander Lindsay is a member of Clan Lindsay.

Sir Alexander Lindsay, 4th Earl of Balcarres, was born about 1689, possibly 1690, place unknown, due to his father living abroad at that time.[1] He was the son of Colin Lindsay and Margaret (Campbell) Lindsay.

He joined the British Army as an Ensign, then rose in the ranks to a Lieutenant in the Horse Grenadier Guards. He transferred as a Captain to Lord Orkney's regiment, second Battalion Royal Scots.[2]

He saw action at Flanders and was wounded at the siege of St. Venant. He also saw service in Ireland. His brother and father's participation in the 1715 Jacobite rebellion ended any hope of advancement in the army.

He moved to Scotland and married Elizabeth (Scott) Lindsay sometime after 31 July 1718 in Fife. However, he was promoted to the rank of Major in Lord Stair's Dragoons in 1732.

In 1734, he went into politics and in that year's general election, he was elected as one of Scotland's sixteen representative peers. He passed away two years later, on 25 July 1736, place unknown, without issue.[3]
