Biography

Sarah Jane Lindsay was baptized in Notre Dame, Quebec City, Quebec on 9 April 1854. Her godparents were Patrick Thompson and Catherine Corrigan (who could not sign her name). This record says that Sarah was eight days old.[1] It was noted that her father (hotelliere) was absent. Then, on the 18 April 1854, Sarah was baptized again in St. Andrew's Church (Presbyterian) in Quebec City by John Cook. Both parents were present. In this record, Sarah was born on 29 March.[2]

Canada Census

1861 - "S" (age 6) was counted with her parents and four siblings. All the children were born in Lower Canada. They were living in a three story stone house.[3] Everyone was "Church of Scotland".

1871 - Sara(15) was counted with her mother and siblings in Lévis, Quebec. Mary was an "hotelliere".[4] In this census, they were all Catholic.

US Federal and State Census

1880 - Sadie (20) was enumerated in her brother-in-law's household on Intendencia St., Pensacola, Escambia, Florida[5].

1900 - Sadie (27) was enumerated in her husband's household at 707 DeVilliers, Pensacola, Escambia, Florida.[6] The household included her son Lynn (13) and daughter Sadie May (7). Sadie said that she had given birth to two children, both still living.

1910 - Sadie (45) was enumerated in her husband's household at 701 N DeVilliers, Pensacola, Escambia, Florida.[7] Her son John L (23) and daughter Sadie May (16) were living there as well.

1920 - Sadie (59) - widowed - was enumerated as head of household at 308 W Belmont St, Pensacola, Escambia, Florida.[8] She was renting here. Her son Len (26) and daughter Sadie May (22) were living there as well.

1930 - "Sadie M" (62) was enumerated as head of household at 803 Belmont St., Pensacola, Escambia, Florida.[9] She owned the house, valued at $1500. Her son "John N" (44) and daughter Sadie M Maxham (34) and granddaughter Blanche L (1) were also living there.

1935 - Sadie L (68) was enumerated as head of household at 803 W Belmont, Pensacola, Escambia, Florida[10] She was living with her son John (47), her sister Louise (60) and her nephew Arthur (32).

Immigration and Naturalization

Sadie immigrated to the US in 1880.[6] In a later census, it is recorded that she immigrated in 1869 and was a naturalized citizen.[8]

Marriage

John Burns was issued a license to marry Sarah Lindsay on 24 April 1883 in Escambia county, Florida. They were married that same day by Rev. M. Gardiner.[11]

Death and Burial

Sadie died on 5 May 1935 in Pensacola, Florida.[12] She was buried in St. Michael's Cemetery in Pensacola.[13]

Funeral services for Mrs. Sadie L. Burns, who died at her home at 803 West Belmont street yesterday morning after a short illness, will be conducted at St. Stephen's Chapel at 9 o'clock this morning. Mrs. Burns leaves one sister, Mrs. Louise Burns; one son, John L. Burns, and one daughter, Mrs. W. R. Maxham, all of Pensacola. Pallbearers will be Arthur Burns, John Rafferty, Grover Robinson, W. D. Cahoon, Nathan Berlin and Geo. Kupfrian. Rev. Father Campdonica will officiate with burial in St. Michael's cemetery. Arrangements are in charge of Waters Hibbert.
