West was born in 1832 at Strubby, Lincolshire. He was the son of Lindsey-2837 John Lindsey and Sarah West.
He was 9 years old in the 1841 Census and the eldest child. His siblings were Jane 8, Elizabeth 6, Samuel 5, Alice 4 and Wright 2 years old.
He was 19 years old in the 1851 Census and now had another sister, Lucy who was 9 while his sister Jane was now married and no longer at home. The family was living at Field House, Strubby with Woodthorpe, Louth, Lincolnshire, England where they farmed 73 acres.
He was 28 years old in the 1861 Census and along with Wright 21 and Lucy 20 was still on the farm with his parents.
West Lindsey was older than Wright and Samuel, but had been was last son to leave for New Zealand, probably because he was needed on the farm.
West LINDSEY & Rebecca WOODLIFFE family
West married Rebecca Woodliffe on the 28 May 1863 at St Wilfrid Church, Alford, Lincolnshire, England / Maltby.
In the 1871 Census, West, his wife Rebecca, 2 and their children, Robert & Lizzy, along with 2 servants were living with West's father, John Lindsey who was now 82.
In 1876 the family emigrated to New Zealand aboard a ship called the Camperdown, which arrived in Nelson at the top of the South Island on 3 July of that year.
They had with them their children William West Lindsey (b. 1864 at Maltby), Robert Woodliffe Lindsey (b. 1866), and Eliza Anne Lindsey (b. 1868). A 4th child, Salome Elizabeth Lindsey was born in Mauku, NZ in 1881.
On the shipping list, William West was aged 12, Robert W. was aged 10. and Eliza A. was 7. West was listed as a farm labourer.
In NZ West was listed in directories as a cheesemaker at Waihou in 1887-88, and a farmer at Patumahoe/Mauku 1890-1893.
There are land records which show that West bought land in NZ, firstly at Mauku in 1880, this being a locality close to Bombay.
West then bought land at Waitoa, near Te Aroha on the 12th September 1885. Waihou and Waitoa have always been known for their butter and cheese factories.
Three other land deeds pertaining to West Lindsey, of Mauku, are dated 1887,1890, and 25 Sept. 1891 …they all involved mortgage agreements on Allotments 12 and 13 Parish of Waiau, and show that the family had moved back to the Mauku area, from Waitoa.
Rebecca died Tuesday 18th August 1891 at Patumahoe/Mauku aged 51.
William, Robert and Eliza would have been adults by then, but Salome was only 10.
Her death seems to have affected West rather badly as he died aged 60, on the 25th July 1893 at Bombay, with "cerebral disease", melancholia, and exhaustion. He had been 17 years in New Zealand.
