Biography

William, Lindsay was born abt 1348,

At Perth on 16 January 1366/67, William Lindsay was granted all the lands of Byres in the vicinity of Haddington in the county of Edinburgh by Sir Alexander Lindsay. The gift was confirmed at Perth the following day by a Royal Charter of King David II.[1]

William was knighted by 1373.

King Robert III confirmed a grant made by Walter Leslie to his close kinsman Sir William Lindsay of the lands of Aberchirder (Aberkyrdore) and others in Banffshire on 3 October 1373 [2]

About 1375 William married Christain Keith daughter to Sir William Keith and his wife Margaret Fraser. On 13 December 1375 William and his spouse Christian were granted the lands of Drem which John de Airth of Walchton resigned. [3]

A Precept of Sasine of the lands of Tolghfraser was granted on 5 Aug 1378 at Elgin by William Keith Marischal of Scotland in favour of Sir William Lindsay of the Byres and his wife Lady Christian. The Tailie of this named Sir Alexander Lindsay, brother to William Lindsay as heir in the event of William dying without lawful issue.[4] It would appear that formerly these had belonged to Christian's forebears as her mother was a Fraser.

By his marriage to Christian, daughter of Sir William Keith, Marischal of Scotland, Sir William Lindsay gained the barony and castle of Dunnottar, which lands he and Christian afterwards, by charter dated 8 March 1392, exchanged with the Keiths for the lands of Ochterotherstruther, of West Markinch, of Pittendriech and with £8 annual rent out of the lands of Dunnotter, reserving the privilege that the eldest son of the family should be sheltered in the castle during infancy in time of intestine warfare. This charter was signed at Fetteresso (Stonehaven)[5]

At Loch Leven, on 1 July 1393 the Bishop of St Andrews confirmed the grant of the lands and castle of Ouchterotherstrudle which William Keith and his wife Margaret Fraser had granted to Sir William Lindsay and Lady Christian mentioning that it came from Sir Alexander Fraser.[6]

King Robert III on 29 June 1393 made a charter of Confirmation in favour of Sir William Lindsay of the Byres for the lands of Pittendreich which he had received from William Keith Marischal of Scotland and his spouse Margaret Fraser.[7] On 6 September 1397 Sir William granted a Precept to infeft William Elphinstone of that Ilk the lands of Pittendreich in Stirlingshire .[8]

  • Marriage 1 Christiana KEITH b: ABT 1375 in Dunnottar Castle, Stonehaven, Kincardineshire, Scotland,

Sir William had a natural son, Andrew of Garmylton who was mentioned in the Exchequer Rolls in 1399 and the tailie of Andrew's gift mentions that failing him having an heir it would pass to the eldest lawful son of Sir William whomsoever. The lack of a name for an eldest heir suggests that Sir William at this time had no lawful son. Futhermore given the date that he had married Christian about 25 years ealier suggests that his lawful sons were born to a second wife after 1399.[9]

Sir William Children:

1. John his heir to the title of the Byres

2. William.

3. Alexander.
