William Newson Ling was born on 2 May 1854 in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia, the son of Ellen Caroline Ling (nee Randall) and William Newson Ling.^[1][2]

He married Elizabeth Blanche Cartwright on 3 July 1877 in Launceston.^[1] Their children were:
