Biography

ANNA LINN, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Henderson) Linn, was born July 9, 1830, and died July 3, 1904. She married John K. Knotts who was born May 21, 1818, and died May 20, 1879. Their home was in the suburbs of Grafton, W. Va. John Knotts was a prosperous and successful farmer. He owned and lived upon a part of the old Luzader farm. Their children are: 1 William L., 2 John Emory, 3 Robert T., 4 Zebulin B., 5 Isaac, 6 Mary Jane, 7 Samuel Spencer and 8 Maggie A.

1 WILLIAM L. KNOTTS was born Nov. 29, 1852, and died Jan. 17, 1917. He married Syrena Bainbridge. Their children are:

1a ELIZABETH ANN KNOTTS, born Feb. 27, 1879. She is unmarried and lives with her mother. For five years she was a teacher in the public schools.

1b MORGAN KINGERY KNOTTS was born Feb. 21, 1881. He is unmarried and lives in Washington, D. C., where he is head of one department of the Patent Office.

1c WILHELMENA ELLEN KNOTTS was born July 10, 1883. She is unmarried and holds a position with the U. S. Government at Pittsburgh.

1d BERTHA MAY KNOTTS was born Dec. 10, 1885. She has a position in Pittsburgh, and is unmarried.

1e WILLIAM LEONIDAS KNOTTS was born Oct. 11, 1900. He taught for a few years in the public schools and is now at home with his mother, and is unmarried.

1f NOEL DEXTER KNOTTS was born Sept. 24, 1896. He is in South America engaged in the mercantile business. He is unmarried.

1g IRIS CYRENE KNOTTS was born May 2, 1888. She is a teacher in the public schools, having just completed her last term, in the spring of 1931.

2 JOHN EMORY KNOTTS, son of John K and Anna (Linn) Knotts, was born Nov. 2, 1854, and died May 16, 1904. He married Mrs. Dora Miller of Indiana where he made his home, but we have no further data of his family.

3 ROBERT T. KNOTTS, son of John K. and Anna (Linn) Knotts, was born Aug. 8, 1857. He married Tillie Lucas, a daughter of Frank and -- (PO\!) Lucas, of Grafton. Robert T. Knotts held the position of Freight Conductor with the B. & O. R. R. Co., until he was retired on pension. Their children are: 1 Sarah, 2 1Iyrtle, 3 Laura, 4 Mary L., 5 Robert Jr., and 6 Frank.

3a SARAH KNOTTS married William Graham, of Grafton. Their children are: 1 Margarett, 2 Frederick, 3 Rachel, and 4 Richard. Their home is in Baltimore.

3b MYRTLE KNOTTS, daughter of Robert T. and Tillie (Lucas) Knotts, is unmarried and lives with her sister, Mrs. Laura Bell at Grafton. She holds a clerical position with the B. & O. R. R. Co.

3c LAURA KNOTTS, daughter of Robert T. and Tillie (Lucas) Knotts married Walter Bell, a son of Vernon and Cinderilla (Marker) Bell of Grafton, where they now reside. They have no children.

3d MARY L. KNOTTS married W. C. Grow of Grafton. They have one child, Matilda Grow.

3e ROBERT KNOTTS JR., son of Robert T. and Tillie (Lucas) Knotts, married Catharine Shaffer, daughter of W. L. K. Shaffer, of Fairmont, W. Va. They have two children: 1 Robert I., and 2 James. Robert Knotts, Jr. has recently been appointed superintendent of the Hazel Atlas Glass Co. factory at Grafton. He is a young man of fine business and executive ability, and is highly esteemed by employees of the company as well as by the officers. Their home is at Grafton, W. Va.

3f FRANK KNOTTS married Dora Koveleski.

4 ZEBULON B. KNOTTS, son of Anna (Linn) and John K. Knotts, was born Oct. 31, 1859, and died Mar. 24, 1915. He married Luella Poe, daughter of Mrs. Mariah Poe, on June 22, 1882. Luella (Poe) Knotts was born Jan. 21, 1859, and died Oct. 11, 1911. The children of Zebulon. B. and Luella (Poe) Knotts are:

4a MINNIE LEE KNOTTS, born Mar. 30, 1883, and died Sept. 24, 1888.

4b LETHA MAY KNOTTS, born Jan. 15, 1885, and died Mar. 30, 1928. She married Harry C. Carroll, of Mansfield, Ohio.

4c ETHEL DARE KNOTTS, born Dec. 2, 1887. She is unmarried and resides at Mansfield, Ohio.

4e ELSIE LIPPENCOTT KNOTTS, born Feb. 6, 1890. She married Lloyd 0. Brown, April 24, 1920. They reside at 113 Knotts Ave., Grafton, W. Va. They have one child, 1 Marvin Adrian Brown, born Mar. 12, 1921.

4f WILLIAM E. KNOTTS, born Mar. 4, 1892. He married Marilla Alice Mann, Aug. 23, 19f5. They have three children: 1 Helen Jeanett, born Sept. 11, 1916;2 Leonard B., born Mar. 18, 1918; and 3 Alice Joan born April 6, 1930.

4g LUELLA BLANCHE KNOTTS, born May 6, 1894. She is unmarried and resides at Mansfield, Ohio.

5 ISAAC ARTHUR KNOTTS, son of Anna (Linn) and John K. Knotts, was born Dec. 13, 1863, and died Dec. 20, 1928. He married Mary Elizabeth Bailey in 1904. She was born Mar. 28, 1884. She is still living and resides near Thornton, W. Va. Their children are: 1 Mary Elizabeth, born Jan. 28, 1905; 2 George Walter, born Nov. 28, 1906, died Dec. 8, 1906; 3 John Arthur, born Oct. 8, 1908; 4 James Bailey, born June 20, 1910. He married Lena L. M. Jacobs June 25, 1930, and have one child, 1 Gertrude M.L., born Feb. 16, 1931; 5 Samuel Donald, born Dec. 9, 1911; 6 Evelyn Mabel, born Aug. 7, 1913; 7 Robert Luke and 8 Ralph Luther, twins born Sept. 25, 1915. Robert Luke died on the day of his birth and Ralph Luther died Oct. 11, 1915; 9 Edith Naomi, born Sept. 23, 1917, and 10 Sanford Lloyd, born June 22, 1920.

5a MARY ELIZABETH KNOTTS married Herbert Ralph Watkins, July 2, 1927. They have two children: 1 Mary L., born April 22, 1928, 2 Lloyd Ralph, born Oct. 5, 1929.

6 MARY JANE KNOTTS, daughter of Anna (Linn) and John K Knotts, was born Feb. 4, 1869. She is unmarried and makes her home at New Martinsville.

7 MARGARETT KNOTTS daughter of Anna (Linn) and John K. Knotts was born Mar. 23, 1872. She married William J. Mays, son of the late John Nelson and Phoebe (Griffith) Mays, of Thornton, W. Va. William J. Mays is the sheriff of Taylor County, serving his second term. The children of William and Margarett (Knotts) Mays are: 1 Clyde, 2 Abraham, 3 Linn, 4 Paul, 5 Vern, 6 Jean, 7 Margarett, 8 Mary, 9 Virginia, and 10 Ruth.

7a CLYDE N. MAYS married Clarinda Trimble, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Trimble, of Grafton, Jan. 5, 1929, Rev. F. J. Twylander officiating. Clyde N. Mays is assistant to chief accountant in Grafton office of the B. &O. R. R. He is a Mason and an active member of the Kiwanis Club. His wife is a graduate nurse from the Mt. Sinai Hospital, Baltimore.

7b ABRAHAM MAYS is with a United States Army corps of engineers and at this time is in Nicaragua, Central America.

7c LINN MAYS enlisted in the U. S. Army and served two and one half years in the Hawaiian Islands. He is now a deputy sheriff in charge of the jail of Taylor County.

7d PAUL MAYS married Ada Rinker. Their home is in Washington, D. C.

7g MARGARETT MATILDA MAYS married Clarence Frederick Schroeder Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Schroeder, of Grafton, on Oct. 23, 1928, at Pittsburgh, Pa., Rev. T. J. Brigham officiating. Margarett M. Schroeder is a graduate of the Graft on High School and attended Fairmont State Teachers' College.

7h MARY M AYS married Earnest M. Clark of Grafton, Jan. 4, 1930.

7i VIRGINIA MAYS is unmarried and at home.

7j RUTH MAYS is unmarried and at home.

8 SAMUEL SPENCER KNOTTS, son of Anna (Linn) and John K. Knotts, was born Sept. 8, 1869, and died July 31, 1908. He was unmarried.
