Biography

Andrew Finley Linn was the youngest son of Adam Linn. His middle name may have been given for someone, a relative perhaps, in the Finley family; in the 1790 census, one George Finley is listed immediately above Andrew's father.^[1] In fact, however, there were two generations named Andrew Finley living in York County, Pennsylvania - where Andrew's father served in the American Revolution - beginning with Capt. Andrew Finley who fought in the French and Indian War for some period surrounding 4 November 1756.^[2]

Andrew appears in the 1840 census as Andrew F. Linn^[3], in 1850 as Finley Linn^[4], in 1860 as Andrew F. Lynn^[5], in his 1868 marriage to Mary Allen (second wife), in the 1870 census as Andrew E. Linn^[6][7], and in 1880 as Andrew F. Linn^[8], and in his 1894 Probate Court record of death as A. Finley Lynn^[9].

Andrew and his first wife, Nancy, were the parents of at least seven children, including one set of twins, as seen in the 1840 through 1860 census ...

The census states also that Andrew owned $4,800 in real property and $939 in personal property.^[12]

Nancy apparently died sometime between 1860 and 1868, and on 16 April of the latter year, Andrew married Mary Allen in Guernsey County.^[13] The couple had no children but are found in the 1870 and 1880 census as follows ...

The census states also that Andrew owned $1,000 in real property and $250 in personal property, having perhaps sold or otherwise disposed of the majority of his land.^[14]

At his death, Andrew was buried in Winterset Cemetery, Winterset, Guernsey County, where his father also lies at rest. His surname is inscribed "Lynn" on his gravestone.^[16]
