Biography

Sarah (Linn) Hull was born in West Virginia.

SARAH ANN LINN, daughter of Samuel and Anzey (Reese) Linn, was born Oct. 10, 1836, at Denton's Ferry, the family having moved from Glady Creek to Benton's Ferry in 1835. She died at Grafton May 8, 1899. She married John Wesley Hull. son of Rev. John and Jane (Nelson) Hull, April 7, 1859. at her father’s home at Benton's Ferry. Rev. Thomas E. Lancaster of the Methodist Protestant Church officiating. John Wesley Hull was born at Monongahela City. Pa. Mar. 26, 1837. He came with his parents from Pennsylvania to West Virginia. Their first home was at Newport (now Catawba) where they located about 1844-5. From there the family moved to Glady Creek and resided at what is still called the "Hull House" near the old tunnel under the road. John Wesley Hull's father was a Methodist Protestant minister and a farmer. The family moved from Glady Creek to Wirt County and bought a farm lying partly in Wirt and partly in Ritchie Counties. J. W. Hull and wife lived at Benton's Ferry after their marriage. They then moved to Parkersburg and lived for a time, and then came back to Benton's Ferry where Mr. Hull entered into partnership with Hugh R. Linn and engaged in merchandising. They conducted a general store and operated a ferry across the river, ferrying all customers free, as many of them came from the other side of the river from as far as Boothsville. After a number of years J. W. Hull sold his interest in the business to Hugh R. Linn and the family went back to Parkersburg, where Mr. Hull engaged in business. The family lived three times in Parkersburg and twice at Benton's Ferry. Their last move was to Grafton, W. Va., where their children were reared and where Mr. and Mrs. Hull both died. They were members of the Methodist Protestant Church, and Mr. Hull was a very enthusiastic worker in the church and Sunday school, having served as superintendent continuously for 32 years. He was a delegate to the West Virginia Conference many times, and a number of times a representative to the General Conference of his church. He always stood for what he believed to be right and for the betterment of the community and the country at large; and always voted against licensing the liquor traffic Loth in town and county, and for prohibition in the State and Nation.

J. W. Hull was engaged in mercantile business at all the places that the family lived, the last being a jewelry business. After closing out this business he spent the last years oi his life as an optician. Sarah Ann (Linn) Hull was a woman of exceptionally good judgment and management. She had good business sense, and a fine judge of human character. Mr. Hull was a member of Lodge No. 75 A. F. A. M. The children of Sarah Ann (Linn) and J.W. Hull are: 1 Harry Lancaster, 2 Nettie Icyphene, 3 Margarett Virginia, 4 Cora Belle, 5 Eva Lee, and 6 Louis Burt.

1 HARRY LANCASTER HULL was born at Denton's Ferry and died at Parkersburg at the age of 3 years and is buried in Cooks Cemetery, Parkersburg.

2 NETTIE ICYPHENE HULL was born in Parkers burg and died at the age of six months and was buried beside her little brother at Parkersburg.

3 MARGARETT VIRGINIA HULL was born at Parkersburg and reared at Grafton. She spent 12 years in Marion County and 2 1/2 years at Raleigh N.C., and a few months with her brother's family at Pittsburgh, Pa., and is now residing with her sister, Mrs. Eva (Hull) Jones at Belington. W. Va. She is a member of the Methodist Protestant Church and of the National Daughters of 1812. She received her education in the public schools of Grafton.

4 CORA BELL (Hull) UPTON, daughter of Sarah Ann (Linn) and J. W. Hull. was born at Benton's Ferry. She married Robert H. Upton. son of Thomas and Lavina (Batson) Upton, October, 1888, at her father's home. Grafton, W. Va. Rev. John F. Covan, pastor of the M. P. Church at Grafton, who had baptized her and her brother and two sisters, and received them all into the church. Dr. Cowan was in the Hawaiian Islands for seven years and now resides at San Diego. Calif. The parents of Robert H. Upton removed from Marion County, W. Va., to Kansas. Robert H and Cora B. (Hull) Upton resided in Grafton for a number of years, but have been living at Fayetteville, N. Car., for about 28 years. He is a Jeweler and Watchmaker. He is a Mason, being both a Shriner and a Knight Templar. Mr. and Mrs. Upton were both members of the M.I. Church at Grafton, but are now connected with the M.I. E. Church South, at Fayetteville, K. C. Mrs. Upton was educated in the public school of Grafton attended the Pittsburgh Conservatory of Music. Their children are: 1 Elsie Lee, 2 Kathleen, 3 Virginia Linn, 4 Robert H. Jr., 5 Roberta Hull twins, 6 John Willoughby, and, 7 Stephen Richard.

4a ELSIE LEE UPTON was born in Grafton, W. Va. Mar. 23, 1890. She married Herbert Stewart Jones, son of Nelson B. and Sadie (Hardin) Jones, of Jackson Springs, NC, May 20, 1917, at Aberdeen, N. C. Herbert S. Jones is agent for the Norfolk and Southern R. R. at Raleigh. NC. He enlisted in signal corps service during the World War; was in Camp Vail, New Jersey, 5 weeks and then sent overseas where he served in a number of Headquarters Cos., at Argonne and remained in service during salvaging after the signing of the armistice, until the next June. Elsie (Upton) Jones and her husband are members of the M. E. Church South. She graduated from the Fayetteville, N. C. High School. They have two children: 1 Stewart Hull Jones, born Nov. 30, 1927, and 2 Henry Upton Jones, born July 30, 1930.

4b KATHLEEN UPTON, daughter of R. H. and Cora B. (Hull) Upton, was born April 5, 1894 at Grafton, W.Va. She married Eugene Gorham Grady, son of Mrs. Josephine (Gorham) Grady Smith and -- Grady. Sept. 26, 1918 in Fayetteville, N. C. Eugene G. Grady enlisted in the Aviation service of the U. S., graduating at Ithaca, N. Y., and was sent to Texas, and from there to Fort Sill, Okla., and remained there until the armistice was signed. He and his wife are members of the M. E. Church South. They both are graduates of the Fayetteville High School. Mr. Grady is senior vice president and cashier of the Western National Bank of Baltimore, Md., where the family resides. They have two children: 1 Kathleen Grady born Aug. 24, 1920, and 2 Eugene G. Grady J r. born July 4, 1926.

4c VIRGINIA LINN UPTON, daughter of R. H. and Cora B. (Hull) Upton was born Dec. 1, 1897 at Grafton, W. Va. She married James Cooper Steadman Poe, son of Edgar Allen and Josephine (Montague) Poe, of Fayetteville, N. C., on May 17, 1917, in Fayetteville, N. C. Mr. Poe is descended from the same family line as the poet Edgar Allen Poe. He is secretary treasurer of the brick works operated by his father. Virginia L. Upton Poe and her husband are both graduates of the Fayetteville, N. C., High School. Both are members of the M. E. Church South. They have two children: 1 Virginia Linn Poe, born Feb. 14, 1920, and 2 James Cooper Steadman Poe Jr., born Feb. 5, 1924.

4d ROBERT HAMILTON UPTON JR., son of R. H. and Cora B. (Hull) Upton, was born on Rose Farm, near Fayetteville, N. C., July 26, 1902. He married John Eloise McLean, daughter of Dr. J. W. McLean and wife, of Godwin, N. C., on Nov. 15, 1927. After graduating from the Fayetteville High School he attended the University of North Carolina for one year. He is a member of the firm of Upton & Hedgepath, engaged in radio business. Mrs. Upton is a graduate of a college for women at Greensboro, N. C., and also a graduate in piano music. They have two children: 1 Robert McLean, born Oct. 7, 1928, and 2 Kathleen Hull Upton, born Dec. 4, 1930.

4e ROBERTA HULL UPTON, daughter of R H. and Cora B. (Hull) Upton, was born at Rose Farm, near Fayetteville, N. C., July 26, 1S02. She is a twin of Robert H. Upton, Jr. She married Oscar Parsley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Margarett (McNeal) Parsley, of Fayetteville, N. C. Roberta H. Upton and her husband are both graduates of the Fayetteville High School, and he attended the University of North Carolina. He is superintendent of a cotton mill at Hillsboro, N. C. He is an Episcopalian and his wife is a member of the M. E. Church South. She attended the North Carolina College for Women at Greensboro, N. C. They have no children.

4f JOHN WILLOUGHBY UPTON, son of R. H. and Cora B. (Hull) Upton, was born in Fayetteville, N. C., Dec. 4, 1904. He married Kathleen Dupree, daughter of Heber Elliott and Katie (Holland) Dupree, Dec. 20, 1928. He is a graduate of the Fayetteville, N. C., High School At present he is in charge of the Parts Department of the Juringan Motor Co., at Fayetteville, N. C. He is a member of the M. E. Church South.

4g STEPHEN RICHARD UPTON, son of R. H. and Cora B. (Hull) Upton, was born Jan. 21, 1911, in Fayetteville, N. C. He graduated from the High School at Fayetteville, in 1928, and is now working for the A. & P. Chain Store Co. Stephen Richard Upton married July 12, 1932, Elizabeth Herndon of Fayetteville, N. C., daughter of Dr. Herndon.


5 EVA LEE HULL, daughter of John W. and Sarah Ann (Linn) Hull, was born at Benton's Ferry, W. Va. She married Harry H. Jones, son of Uriah and Pernissa (Ford) Jones of Knottsville, W. Va., Nov. 15, 1894. Rev. J. F. Cowan officiating, assisted by Rev. I. A. Barnes, then pastor of the Grafton M. P. Church. She and her husband were members of the M. P. Church, but since his death she has united with the Presbyterian Church at Belington, W. Va. Harry H. Jones died at Daytona Beach, Florida, Jan. 15, 1907, where he had gone for his health. after having stayed at Hot Springs, Ark., for a time without receiving any benefit. At the time of his death, Harry H. Jones was cashier of the Citizens Savings Bank of Belington, W. Va. He was a Mason, Knight Templar and Shriner. Both he and his wife were graduates of the Grafton High School and he of the Poughkeepsie Business College, N. Y. Harry H. Jones was a good businessman, a hard worker and highlv esteemed by his fellowmen. They have one daughter, Dorothy Lee Jones, born at Grafton, W. Va. She married Thomas A. Rhorabough, July 4, 1921, at a camp near Clarksburg, owned by a friend who lived at the camp. The Rev. Mr. Graves, of the Baptist Church officiating. They have one child, Catharine Lee Rhorabough, born Dec. 12, 1930. Dorothy Lee Jones and her husband are both graduates of the Belington High School, and he attended the School of Agriculture of the West Virginia University for two years. He is a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He worked for the H. J. Heinz Company at Pittsburgh for two years, and was then transferred to California, and now is manager of the H. J. Heinz Co. plant at Berkeley. Calif. where they live. He is a·Mason and a member of the Baptist Church. and she is a member of the Presbyterian Church.

6 LOUIS BURT HULL, son of John W. and Sarah Ann (Linn) Hull, was born at Benton's Ferry, W. Va. He married Katharine Elizabeth Spahr, daughter of Rev. Samuel K. Spahr and Katharine Elizabeth (Cook) Spahr, in Tompkins Cove, N. Y., Up the Hudson, on Dec. 24, 1897. Dr. Spahr, the bride's father, officiating, assisted by Rev. Dr. J. F. Cowan, both of them ministers of the Methodist Protestant Church, of which also both Mr. and Mrs. Hull were members. Louis B. Hull and his wife both were graduates of Adrian College. Katharine Spahr Hull was born at Adrian, Mich., and died at Pittsburgh, Pa., suddenly on Nov. 4, 1916. She is buried in Tecumseh, Mich., beside her mother. She was a member of college sorority, Delta Delta Delta, and Louis B. Hull was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He attended and took post graduate work in Columbia University, New York, and also in the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. and Mrs. Hall both taught in Western Maryland College at Westminster, Md.

Louis B. Hull married for his second wife Wilmetta McLucas, daughter of Jacob B. and Mary (Sears) Mc Lucas, Feb. 21, 1919, in Bellevue, Pa. Rev. Dr. George Miller officiating. Mrs. Hull's home was at McConnellsville, Ohio, but at the time of her marriage to Mr. Hull she was employed at the M. P. Book Concern at Pittsburgh, Pa., and since the death of her husband, she and her mother have resided at Columbus, Ohio, her father being dead. Louis B. Hull had no children by his second marriage. He died suddenly at his home in Bellevue, Pa., on Palm Sunday morning, Mar. 28, 1926, and was buried beside his first wife in Tecumseh, Mich.

Louis B. Hull was very active in Christian Endeavor work during his young manhood and quite active in church and Sunday school in later years, being superintendent of the Sunday school at Bellevue, Pa. at the time of his death. He was strictly temperate and never tasted liquor in his life; and was strong for national prohibition. At the time of his death Louis B. Hull was principal of Latimer Jr. High School, Pittsburgh, Pa., and had 70 teachers and 1700 pupils under his supervision. He taught in the University of Pittsburgh during three summer terms. After his death the pupils of Latimer Jr. High School raised money and built a room to the North Side Y. M. C. A. building in memory of him and a friend furnished the room. His first wife, Katharine Spahr Hull was quite active in missionary work in the M. P. Church. They had three children: 1 John Cook Spahr Hull, 2 Margarett Elizabeth Hull, and 3 Sarah Louise Hull

6a JOHN COOK SPAHR HULL, son of Louis B. Hull, son of Sarah A. Linn Hull, and Katharine (Spahr) Hull, was born Sept 24, 1904, in Pittsburgh, Pa., N. S. He married Helm Allen, daughter of Rev. A. J. Allen, president of the Pittsburgh Conference, M. P. Church, Aug. 24, 1926. Rev. Lyman E. Davis, editor of the Methodist Recorder officiating. J. C. Spahr Hull and his wife are both members of the M. P. Church. They both attended Adrian College at Adrian, Mich. He graduated and received his A. B. degree, and she lacked 20 hours of, on account of sickness. He is a member of his father's Frat Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He is a teacher in the Perry Jr. High School of Pittsburgh, and pastor of the Rankin M. P. Church. They have one child, Virginia Spahr Hull, born Oct. 17, 1928.

6b MARGARETT ELIZABETH HULL, daughter of Louis B. and Katharine (Spahr) Hull, was born Dec. 14, 1906, at Pittsburgh. She graduated from Bellevue High School in June 1924, and from Adrian College in 1928, receiving her degree. She belonged to the same sorority as her mother, Delta Delta Delta. She teaches in the Bellevue High School. She is a member of the M. P. Church at Bellevue.

6c SARAH LOUIS HULL, daughter of Louis B. and Katharine (Spahr) Hull, was born Feb. 9, 1913, in Bellevue, Pa. She is a student in Bellevue High School She makes her home with her brother as does also her older sister when at Bellevue. Both are members of the Methodist Protestant Church at Bellevue.
